This weekend I intend to look long and hard at my Mission 101 situation, and hopefully line up some things I can do to push things forward. It's time to stop blaming The Move for my inability to get Tasks completed, and do something about it all.

Oh, and today, I received potential components for one of my remaining props projects [ Task 88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects ] - so there's a start.

"BIG" News... There's apparently going to be a bunch of prequel mini-series for the "classic" comic series Watchmen. Also apparently, the original writer Alan Moore wants nothing to do with it. Cue the explosion of the internet.

Watchmen was the "real deal" when I first set foot inside a comic shop. I never bought the series, and I haven't read them since. Closest I ever got to that was seeing a sizeable chunk of the recent movie, which was also decried by the purists. You could actually blame this "ground-breaking" series for the current state of the comic book industry, as these particular comics turned affordable escapist material into the literature of disaffected studenty types, that could be sold at "grown-up" prices. Oh, and at the same time gave a bunch of angry anti-Thatcher types wildly over-inflated egos...

ITEM! I'm going with that epilogue I mentioned yesterday for ...Mane-of-Night: Dancers of Freeport, as a way of expanding what happens outside of our heroine's experience. I don't have my "master blueprint" for the whole run-up to *SPOILER?* WORLDS COLLIDE *END_SPOILER?* yet - but I can't really blame any of that on my usual weekend hassle, 'cause there honestly wasn't that much. Just a few small jobs that needed dealt with, and were - I've just not fully readjusted to the concept of an unbuggered-up weekend yet.

ITEM! Have I just found the perfect item for one of my "props" for my Mission 101 Task 88
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
. The idea is to make a Mane-of-Night energy-whip bracelet THAT LIGHTS UP, but I have utterly failed to find a light source that can be easily switched on and off, ideally through leather, and I may just have found what I need...

ITEM! Oh, and during the same shopping "sprint", I ordered some more flash drives - I already have far more than I could possibly need, but dammit they keep getting smaller, and therefore more desireable...

ITEM! Chalk up another for Mission 101 Task 28 - add Paper Moon (1973) to the "classic movie a month" list!

ITEM! Get this - the book of War Horse (which I'm currently reading and enjoying) has sold more copies in the UK in the last two weeks than it had WORLDWIDE since it was published 25 YEARS AGO. Yay!

ITEM! Time to kick back before NEW CSI New York!

Back to work tomorrow - and yet again, my day took some time to start to my satisfaction. We had a partial power-outage following ANOTHER bout of stormy weather, but that was all due to a circuit-breaker tripping, not wind or falling trees - and right after that, the Christmas decorations absolutely HAD to come down...

I am only now getting my arse in a seat, to try and make some use of what little remains of my work-break. I'm already exploring options for my loooooong-overdue hardware upgrade - damn all these multi-core processors - and some other shopping may be done before week's end ...ooooh, new LEGO minifigures...

Now may be the time to start planning on, or in some instance complete, some of my major creative Mission 101 Tasks, such as
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
91 - Create a "personal goddess"
94 - Make a PD-worthy pair of boots from scratch!
97 - Build a diddley bow
- pity we're now short a craft shop...

Time, perhaps, to go looking for more leather and some faux suede, for two projects outside of the Mission "portfolio". Yes, I'm in the mood to make stuff - weather permitting.

Errands Of Mercy continues, and our heroes come to terms with their discovery, and what it means for the people of Tol'Celpres. But as they weigh up the Herculean task before them, there is hope, as two of the greatest minds in the universe are applied to the matter...

Release Notes... The Author: "The idea simply came out of the blue - or out from under the mat. I don't tend to incorporate elements of my own life in the stories, but this time, it just felt right."

Elsewhat... I would post video of my Mission 101 Task 88 sub-*SCORE*, but I can't work out how to do it.

Meanwhile, I'm sorely pissed about TWO phone-calls I've been expecting today that simply DID NOT HAPPEN. Dammit, people, just about EVERYONE has a phone in their sodding pocket, and they STILL can't keep to a date and time. It's just simply RUDE to keep people waiting!

Mission 101 News... Looks like I may be on the verge of counting sub-Task 1 of 3 on my prop-making Task 88
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
as a *SCORE*...

- and that's actually BEFORE they feature in ANY story. Excuse the DSi-quality photos - I'll post something a bit more professional soon, when I officially call this Task one-third done.

I just hope Mane-of-Night doesn't mind me borrowing her dancing bells...

Meanwhile... Ye Gods, why are the Redskins sucking so badly right now? I dread hearing the results now.

Now this is more like it. Yes, there have been one or two household jobs to attend to, but I managed to deal with those, and extract another hard drive, this time from a dead computer. Data recovery was a complete success, and there are now two "gutted" machines beside my desk - getting closer to counting Mission 101 Task 59
59 - Learn to upgrade PCs
as a *SCORE* - I know what a graphics card looks like now. However, completing this Task will require me to install a new component into a functioning machine, and return that PC to fully functioning condition, and that's the scary part. Right now, I'm running out of operational computers - they're actually outnumbered by the Game Boys and DSes in my possession (monochrome Game Boy, DS Lite, DSi XL)...

More Mission 101 News... My first "prop" (or more rightly pair of props) for Task 88
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
are coming along nicely, after a mid-week complete about-turn in design. The main components are ready - just about - and all that's needed now are suitable fastenings, which may require some more knotting research.

Operation Funplex News... Gonna have a look at some potential costume options, after one spectacularly fell through last weekend (and I still have no go-ahead to send the offending item back and get my refund). Hmmm...

And Finally... They've done it again - the Rush song "Face Up" on "Roll The Bones" has "Brighthawk soundtrack" potential!

Yesterday, the bank advised me to make an appointment to see a "financial advisor" or somesuch. I did just that, and got an appointment for today. I was early, and sat waiting... and waiting... and waiting...

By the time I actually got seen, I'd been there half an hour, and had been told THREE TIMES that someone would see me in the next five to ten minutes. The "advisor" was little more than a BOY, and he seemed to be struggling to operate the computer - and I wanted out of there, for his sake. He couldn't make the transfer of funds I requested...

CLICK. My switch got flipped. I told him not to bother, and departed as politely as I could manage, but inside I was freakin seething. I don't care how busy they were, or what problems they were having - this was MY TIME that was being wasted.

Boy, was I glad there was a comic order waiting for me at home - when I could finally read any of it.

Elsewhat... What looked like a very promising solution to one of my "props", for Mission Task 88
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
might not be the ideal option after all. I may already come across a simpler alternative - I shall see how that's going to work out

Wednesday actually started on Tuesday, with a phone-call. Our DIY supplies had arrived, and Yours Truly took a day off to head out of town to get them. At the same time, I got to do some of the shopping I missed out on the last time I went "over the bridge", and picked up some craft supplies, in particular materials for Task 88
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
Some serious knot-work ahead.

After that, the main event - quite literally. By that I mean taking myself and Parental to the Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers, in town on the final leg of a substantial and almost Gillan-esque magnitude. Those unfamiliar with the troupe (including me) might have expected a Japanese line-up, but this is an all-European outfit, and I'm quite happy to say no-one will view that as a shortcoming. Not for one second!

Six-strong, this is a group able to make one serious wall of sound, one that requires only a modest amount of stage set-up; just the right amount of lighting and martial-arts style coreography to tie the whole show together. The music does the talking, and when it's music that makes your diaphragm vibrate, you can only sit and LISTEN.

It was particularly refreshing to sit and enjoy something different, in a smaller venue that is usual for me, but when you get that kind of reaction from a couple of hundred people, that just doesn't matter. Sometimes you just have to "take the plunge" - trust me, it's worth it.

The Verdict: Devotion to your art + head-spinning exertion = an excellent evening's entertainment! 8 / 10 and a provisional sub-*SCORE* for
27 - See one stage show a year
because it was preceded by dinner at the theatre...

VERY busy day. Too tired to cover it all just now.

G'night, Dear Reader...

This is rumour control... The protestors are wanting to camp outside St Pauls Cathedral because if they were any closer to the Stock Exchange, they'd be too "out of sight" to draw attention to the police "heavy-handedness". They had a camp in Edinburgh too, and that was hardly on a bank's doorstep either.

I hope that, tomorrow morning, the protestors will be taking their silly masks off. Hallowe'en will be over by then.

Meanwhile, on the sensible side of town... Ooooh - I may just have a third potential cosplay prop in mind, for Task 88
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
True, it's an item that I only just designed this morning, but I just happen to have most of the necessary components already available.

Development News... Today, I have been doing some more Mane-of-Night type-up, following a good writing opportunity on the Edinburgh bus. MoN-302 Mane-of-Night And The Wild New World should be beginning full production very soon - I have one and a half Brighthawk chapters to complete first, however.

And finally... Bills 23 Redskins 0? Oh holy crap, it's one of THOSE seasons again, and we can't even blame Donovan McNabb this time...

Ho hum, another Saturday knackered...

...or so it seemed. However, one of the first shops I went into - pretty much just passing through - yielded a startling discovery...

YES. I scored me the casing for the long-proposed Omnisensor prop for Mission 101 Task 88 - create three writing-related props. Thank you H&M - again! I have that same chain of stores to thank for several jewellery items acquired earlier in the week that will now allow my Personal Goddess to have music wherever she goes...

Some household requirements were also addressed - eventually - and I will be heading back soon to pick up a vital piece of merchandise. That's okay, as it should allow me to finally catch up with the shopping I had hoped to do today. I hope I can squeeze in a visit to Edinburgh Zoo next week - but we'll see how that works out...
patentdragon: (Default)
Change of pace - here's a bunch of photos of recent acquisitions and work-in-progress for some of my current Mission Tasks...

Task 88 - Make props of items from my projects... I see the beginnings of an energy whip...

Task 97 - Build a diddley-bow... Guitar innards - now, where do those wires go...?

...here? Hmmm, looks like we may have a problem...

At least the Personal Goddess (Task 91) now has legs - and a shoe size...
patentdragon: (Default)
Trying to be positive now...

Shopping News... In a round-about way, we swapped the problematic heater for a smaller version. With careful management of its operation, things should be okay - hopefully. At least that should mean no room-swap, and the elimination of one source of grief. Good. Just hope it does the job - or the next few months are going to be testing.

Still no sign of this month's comics - and hopefully the comic boxes I ordered several months ago. If there's no sign of those this delivery, I will be asking questions (like "where are my fucking comic boxes?").

If I wasn't watching last night's Packers @ Falcons, I'd probably be hard at work sourcing Mission 101 Task materials, mainly for prop creation - as in
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
I had considered augmenting one design with electronics, but my jury-rigged solution just doesn't seem to be coming together. A little more applied cleverness - and a somewhat cruder solution - and this could work! All I have to do then is learn some electronics - which just might help with
97 - Build a diddley bow
If my environment can be made more conducive to creativity, both physically and psychologically, things will go a whole lot more smoothly. Guess I should draw up a "wants" list, if I'm going to progress with some of these creative Tasks.
patentdragon: (Default)
Yesterday's music choice should have been 2112 by Rush, that blog entry being number twenty-one twelve. Another thing that hasn't quite gone to plan.

So yeah, Saturday did not meet with expectations. I didn't manage to get much done, but I eventually got to use my handy-dandy new PC tool kit to open up the guitar and examine what goes where, with an eventual view to extracting one of the pick-ups for my diddley-bow...
97 - Build a diddley bow
and I'm not quite getting it. Oh, and then some last-minute shopping was needed - heating for my bedroom, actually. During that brief excursion, I managed to grab an important piece for one of my props
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
- something else that didn't get advanced today...

Add another to the list.

Yeah, ain't I a miserable bastard... There is, perhaps, a legitimate reason. I haven't had a proper day off since The Move. A whole day of not being hassled, or running to a schedule - either mine OR someone else's. And no, I don't mean my Patent Saturday plan...

UPDATE! Just purchased components for
91 - Create a "personal goddess"
- the adventure begins...!
patentdragon: (Default)
First things first...

Redskins 28 Giants 14

Oooooh, yeeeeaaaah... First win over the Giants since, what, 2006? That'll do nicely. Biggest winning margin in who knows how long? EXCELLENT.

Meanwhile... I didn't catch the late game, simply because it was too damn late, but the radio coverage of the Redskins game more than made up for it. Come the morning, the remains of the latest hurricane were starting to make their presence felt with some early rain, but I didn't get wet - in fact, I came home rather happy...

How so, you might ask? Well, my lunchtime surfing took me to eBay, and what did I find...?

1 VERY LARGE TOPAZ GLASS FACETED TEARDROP PENDANT 64mm and

Jumbo Teardrop Crystal Glass Pandent Free P/P H10 - two items VERY much suited to the task of making a cosplay prop Mane-of-Night energy whip, for my Mission 101 Task 88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects. Tasty.

Taking no chances, I bought both.

Talking of Mane-of-Night... I am now "breaking ground" on the next full Mane-of-Night story, title to be decided. The Brighthawk episode I've been ploughing through isn't finished yet, but I felt like a change of pace.

On the matter of Mission tasks... My book-making (Task 85 - ...make my own books!) has stalled again. This attempt got closer to completion than Try Number One, but things didn't quite work out when I tried the next step. No materials have been lost this time, but a couple of steps will need to be redone. Annoying, but I will persevere!

Now, where might I find information on wiring up guitar pick-ups...?
patentdragon: (Default)
First Saturday in three weeks that I've had the opportunity to kick back, and properly relax... and we've got a last-minute house-viewing. That'll be the lie-in knackered, then, closely followed by a good dose of afternoon arse-up, and ending with "desperately trying to make up for the start of the day".

All of this will, of course, be preceded by a whole bunch of "fall asleep at the keyboard"...

I'm starting to think that "writing hour" may soon become a necessity.

On a lighter note... Found some very useful foam sheeting on eBay, but I'm wishing I'd ordered TWO sheets, given that I have two projects that would benefit from it, but Item 1 of Task 88
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
seems far more likely to reach fruition soon than
94 - Make a PD-worthy pair of boots from scratch!
- both of which need some careful preliminary design work, but Task 94 involves some extra issues, such as making/getting made some sole units.

Interesting (and busy) times ahead!
patentdragon: (Default)
Mission 101 Task 88 Update... So about "The Big Project"...

This will work - I've made two small-scale card mock-ups of the main head-piece, and whilst I may have to tweak the design a bit to give the mask just a little bit more style, the basic concept appears to be sound. The sooner that foam sheet arrives, the sooner I can go to full-scale mock-up - and after that, I'm thinking snake-skin texture leather...

Development News... I had briefly toyed with the idea of postponing the next Mane-of-Night story, as the story will not directly affect The Road To REIGNFALL, but this story is very much a "hot item". It could be "in the can" way quicker than other recent stories.

And Finally... it's Comics Day!

Update! No Move-stuff this Saturday! Yay!
patentdragon: (Default)
Okay, here goes...

There we go - the official "The Move" header icon, depicting the first thing I hung up in my office-to-be. This cheery face represents a heck of a lot - embracing the key event of The Year Of Change, letting go of the only home I've ever known...

Intense stuff. Moving some stuff in has changed the nature of the whole business, but there's still going to be some difficult moments, and a whole bunch of shipping stuff from one place to another. They say "get one room totally sorted before you do anything else", to give yourself some kind of refuge - well, that's not going to be the office, not by any stretch of the imagination. The bedroom is a better option in that respect...

Meanwhile - on the Mission 101 front... Remember
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
- well, I'll pushing something special into high gear...

This is going to be fun.

And Finally... Purely by chance, I came across an excellent cover version of Frank Marino's "World Anthem" - the anthem of Dominion!
patentdragon: (Default)
Sunday's been something of a day for recovering from yesterday, and so it's not been entirely constructive - BUT a variety of things have been going through my mind, and hands. I've been...
- pursuing some crafting endeavours, using my expanding knotting abilities to equip a new flash drive case with a strap/belt loop (courtesy of the excellent knot-tying blog by Stormdrane)
- finishing off the repairs to a paracord bracelet I had to cut off, replacing the Monkey Fist button with a Celtic Button Knot (that's for the knotting enthusiasts)
- giving serious thought to refreshing my footwear options now that I have a satisfactory storage solution at Site B
- considering the final touches to the craft project that will see me able to put a *SCORE* beside my Mission 101 Task 52 - Complete some craft projects I've started, and
- contemplating an approach to something that could just count towards Mission 101 Task 88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
- so not a wasted day, all in all. Writing hasn't made it out of the starting gate, however, but I'll see if I can get something done this evening. Oh, and I'll be needing to assemble a Mission report for October at some point, too.

I've taken something of a leap forward in the crafting field, mostly thanks to the excellent web resource that is Instructables. I'd looked into its value for my Mission craft tasks, but only now that I became a subscriber, the full potential has been unlocked - ah, the joy of being able to print out customised instructions!

Coming soon...

No. I haven't forgotten...

Development News... Okay, Chapter 6 is done for MoN-204 "Mane-of-Night And The Hunter's Game", and strong progress is being made with the final chapter. Posting will commence on Saturday, no matter what. In a related issue...

Mission 101 News... What makes THIS:
88 not out...

ALMOST a ***SCORE!*** for
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects (0/3)
one might ask?

Answer: THIS
Still 88 not out...

Read MoN-204 to find out why...

Oh, and no, this item doesn't count for Task 88, as adding the inscription can hardly be called "creating" anything. At least you, dear reader, can now see why the book in question showed up on my "book a month from a real bookshop" task (#29) - it's an important reference book. Trust me, all will be explained...
