"...a brand new gaming PC!" - or at least that's what I'm now researching. Yeah, I got the laptop back yesterday (with a new fan in it), and following some advice from Ultima Online associate Aurelius (thanks, my friend), I searched online for any indication that this laptop's issues might be something others have encountered, and perhaps solved without any additional expense - only to learn that a whole bunch of folks have experienced the same overheating. There is an official "solution", in the form of a fan override program that forces the fan to work at maximum speed on request...

I installed it, and it worked just ONCE (so far). I got good FPS and a fairly cool system for a short stint at Minecraft, and Star Trek Online ran pretty well after that... BUT the heat then was definitely on the increase, to what felt like dangerous levels.

This is getting beyond a freaking limit. There may be other things I can do, but I'm now certain those will only be short-term work-arounds. A new desktop gaming machine is becoming imperative.

Time to climb the Mount Doom of computer specs. unfortunately, I don't seem to have a Samwise to share the journey with me...

I've not been posting as many videos lately because... well, the current Minecraft series is getting ZERO views, whilst the new(-ish) Star Trek Online stuff is in fact generating a whole bunch more traffic: Episode 1 now has 233 views, as I write - the only thing with more views is the "how to farm Blazes" video I created in response to the trouble DaveChaos was having a while back, and that's responsible for the vast majority of my views...

I'm scaling back for a bit, and hopefully the STO stuff will keep people interested until I can launch something else - "Ace In The City", anyone...?

Meanwhile, THIS is awesome...

So much for me being more regular with blogging.

Anyway, on to something else: new video series...!

Elsewhat... Toilet Bat was safely returned to the roost, I'm told - but not before another two bats had a similar problem, and one did not survive. A shame, but hopefully that issue is now fully dealt with, and the colony is now secure.

Other Elsewhat... All isn't entirely going to plan on the Star Trek Online front, as the special gear I was working towards (see video above) has turned out to be a bunch more expensive than anticipated. Bugger.

And finally, on a brighter note, I have received the main part of my recent "special present" order. I had thought to do an unboxing video, but I don't really have the proper setting for it. I will, instead, take a photo, and share it here...

Struggling to get into a blogging mood. Maybe I should try and do it at the start of the evening, INSTEAD of the end...

News, news, news... is there any? Oh yeah: we ARE getting Thanos in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (57 days to go), played, or at least voiced, by James Brolin - but how big a part that will be remains to be seen. In the meantime, there's one less big movie between then and now, as Jupiter Ascending slides from July to next February, apparently to allow more work on the SFX (probably some tinkering with 3D conversion (sighs)...?). It could be that the makers are afraid that the "not a franchise" tag is going to hurt their product, like it seems to have impacted on Edge Of Tomorrow (unfortunately).

Meanwhile, and this may be hard to believe, I appear to be finding my way back into Star Trek Online, at the cost of any serious involvement in Minecraft. Crazy...
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Okay, so that's my extended Spiritwalk down-time done, and it's back to whatever counts as "normal" these days. However, I've not been in a Minecraft frame of mind, lately, and I've actually been doing a whole bunch more Star Trek Online (such as all this evening, bar the usual Ultima Online). I'm not sure I'll be going back to the level of activity I was at before I discovered "Minecrack", but it's been fun.

The Big Question... ...what next? I'm not entirely sure, but I feel inclined to spend some money, after two rather disappointing excursions where I came home with not a great deal of stuff. I may not have the room for much, but dammit...
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Let's Do The Time Warp Again... Yeeeeeah... *sighs* I am no closer to a solution to my Minecraft tribulations. I have been able to track down the approximate source of the issue - having both 32- and 64-bit Java on my system, both of which now seem to want to run when Minecraft starts up. I kicked the 64-bit Java out, and the game wouldn't start, so I restored the 64-bit software and yes, the game runs, but with the same problems I had at the beginning - hence the Rocky Horror (Picture) Show references...

I turned to the game community for help, but so far, the problem just doesn't seem "sexy" enough to merit anyone's attention. This is a real pain in the ass... but it does give me time to do a bunch of Star Trek Online stuff, such as get the 4th anniversary starships for my Science characters all fully equipped with their Special Episode reward components. Just one rerun of the mission left to do now...

Things seem to be going a whole bunch better right now. The work on the windows should be continuing soon, the weather is nice (mainly), with Friday at the errr, apoapsis of our recent hot spell yeah, someone's been playing Kerbal Space Program, Star Trek Online seems to be working again, Minecraft is starting to look like its old self again (and boy did I have some splendid luck!)...

Pity that some concert-going plans aren't moving so smoothly. I may just have missed a golden opportunity... but then there MAY just be a chance to remedy things when I'm in Edinburgh on Friday for PACIFIC RIM.

Can. Not. Wait.
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Oh, holy crap: The scaffolding is up.

That's the REAL big news. Could The Move be a BIG step closer to completion by week's end - or am I falling prey to a BIG dose of wishful thinking...?

Elsewhat... Gods, is Star Trek Online managing to piss me off right now. I have about 1 1/2 hours of video I could easily - and gladly - trim down to about ten minutes of "highlights"...

Video News... More Minecraft...!

Think I better start working on my Star Trek Online - Legacy Of Romulus, before I run out of space AGAIN - just over ONE TERABYTE of material already! Yes, I was surprised too - and I'm 1) only at level 30 so far, and 2) a couple of missions didn't make it to recording status because stuff started to laaaaaaaag horribly...
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Not much to report, except that I'm not entirely sure a full play-through of the new Romulan content for Star Trek Online is going to be viable as a "Let's Play" for my channel, given that the game sometimes slows down to sub-slug speed when I'm recording. I'll try and get some key moments - although I've already missed a major turning point already...

As far as the "Let's Play" is concerned, I have something else in mind, and that's DUNGEON MASTER!

Coming VERY soon.

Meanwhile, my back is starting to act up. Wonderful timing, spine...
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Sooooo...

...Star Trek Online?
CHECK - running fine now, with no damn queues. Bit HD-space hungry on the recording front, though.

...Minecraft?
CHECK - advancing plans for "Season 2"... when I'm not getting my ass kicked by Zombie Pigmen, or flooding rooms with lava... *sighs*

...Travel plans?
CHECK-ish - I need access to a printer, which is my first "must do" when I get back to work. Now, which luggage should I take...?

...And the rest?
I'll deal with that when it crosses my path, Dear Reader.

A better day - and it was THURSDAY, not Friday - in that I was actually able to get into Star Trek Online. Not such good news about the videos I was making, however, as a hefty lag-asaurus made its nest right in my path...

No recording = no lag, so I kept on playing. In the meantime, I have found a nice little narrative device to put into play when the recordings are absent: I recap what's gone before in a chat with my ship's barman! I've been trying to think what voice to give him - I have a rough version that's just me "talking to myself" - but I may just "interrupt" him, just when he's about to "speak". You'll see what I mean when it goes live.

"Yeah, I know what you're thinking, but hold on..."

"No, there's more..." - that kind of thing.

And no more queues, so far.
patentdragon: (unexpected)

Today has been mostly this. I did manage to get in-game long enough to purchase the Original Series Uniform Pack, and equip my new character with said outfit...

So much for recording a bunch of "Let's Plays". I sacrificed much of my day's playing time to the great god External-Drive to make space for the raw videos, so I am far from Happy-Bunny Land.

Okay - guess I'll be doing some shopping tonight, then. I now have the time, after all.
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Done: watching over the exams!
Done: received my Rush ticket!
Not Done: Star Trek Online patching. It's "Legacy Of Romulus" Day, but I haven't had the chance to play yet. maybe before LOR-Day becomes LOR-Yesterday...?

There's no real hurry. The next three days are intended to be seriously laid-back, especially tomorrow - which just happens to be personal "sacred day" Spiritwalk...

Later, Dear Reader...!

Update: Patching done! Let's go (or very possibly crash in a heap of binary soup)!

Update on the Update: "Unable to log in for an unknown reason" - America is AWAKE, maybe? Gods, this is like Ultima Online's "Age Of Shadow" expansion all over again, but in stead of necromancers and paladins, it's Romulans...
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Oooohkay. Seems like I have a tendancy for finding things to do on Thursdays, and I don't mean Ultima Online. In three week's time, I'm heading out of town again, 'cause I just got me a Rush ticket! It's kind of a Spiritwalk thing, but not an "all-in" arrangement - although I could go to dinner after...

Meanwhile... I'm waiting for Star Trek Online to patch in readiness for a chance to test the new Romulan content before the launch in a week and a half. Whilst that's going... and going... and going... I'm gradually making progress with my latest acquisition, the quirky and brilliant Don't Starve. Ah, the joys of "indie" games...!
patentdragon: (unexpected)
It's not been the most exciting of birthdays - I'm thinking that maybe the whole concept is overrated...

I took the day off. I bought and installed Kerbal Space Program - haven't managed to get anyone into orbit yet. I recorded some Star Trek Online, and pieced together a video that should be ready to view any time now...

Update... Here it is!

(Note to self: get more professional video-editing software...)

Anyway, I have booked an opening-day viewing of STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS for next week, and that should be well worth the expedition. I seem to be taking a lot of Thursdays off lately...
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Damn. I missed "Venting Day" for the first time - but then I was some distance away from any major body of water that day.

Think I'll go play some Star Trek Online - haven't done that for a while...
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Hmph. I had planned on starting a a fresh attempt at 30 days of continual posts, only to look up from my screen and see it had gone midnight. Bugger...

Anyway, it's video time!

Next up: the first of the Minecraft videos!
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Seems like quite a few people have also posted videos of the Star Trek Online 3rd Anniversary mission. It might be interesting, and possibly educational, to see what others have done with the same material. I could certainly do with honing my commentary skills.

Meanwhile... Could we be close to seeing another milestone in The Move? Could the last stumbling block be about to be removed...?

Also... I just happened to notice that Stargate Universe is being shown on week-day evenings, and so I didn't miss the second part of the series opener. It MAY be a bit like Voyager, but the "crew along for the ride, like it or not" idea should be promising.

And THAT was Day 8. Not a lot else happened...
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Okay, that's another video posted...

and there's more coming, 'cause this is just Part 1 of a two-part presentation (the full nearly one hour would've taken ages to upload). I'm quite pleased with how it's turned out, although I'm not sure whether I can do some encoding wizardry (heh) to crunch things down a bit. I'll just have to do some more research, or maybe even buy some additional software - something more like what Windows Movie maker used to be like...

Also, yes I can hardly continue using the "Post-A-Day" title after yesterday, but let's see if I can make it the rest of the way. I'm sure I can.
