patentdragon: (unexpected)

Shelling out for a "Hot Ticket" package, I found myself with a pretty sweet seat, (18 rows from) front and centre. The band hit the stage pretty close to the official curtain-up, with Subdivisions, but it took Limelight to get the first big crowd response of the night, and for the SECC to find full voice. It was good to get to hear The Pass live for the first time - for this correspondant - and the songs I didn't recognise, due to niggling gaps in the collection, are already having me on the hunt - Grand Design, Territories - where are you, now...?

As far as more recent albums go - that's Vapour Trails and Snakes And Arrows to the uninitiated - there was little to be heard, just a quite explosive (literally) Far Cry from the latter, and no Workin Them Angels (a personal favourite), but you can't please everybody every time. Not that I'm complaining, for the best was yet to come...

After the now customary mid-set break, it was time to roll out the new material - almost all of the Clockwork Angels album. The previous two tours have been done along similar lines, with much of Snakes And Arrows dotted around that set, and the full anniversary performance of Moving Pictures on the Time Machine tour. Caravan got a strong welcome, but that was easily surpassed by the reaction to Clockwork Angels, with the multiple video screens "flying" in the light-rig, and present throughout the new material. This part of the set, featuring the "Clockwork Angels String Ensemble" as the first performers to share the stage with the band for an extended period, was the most spectacular I'd seen from them in the four shows I've attended - the end of Carnies came very close to surpassing Kiss for pyros! Even so, the real highlight of this set-within-a-set had to be the anthemic Headlong Flight - surely this will feature in sets to come for quite some time!

Next, a return to the classics and semi-classics: Dreamline, with a nice video-screen tribute to Neil Armstrong; a pleasant surprise in the form of Red Sector A, the now almost obligatory YYZ - and no Rush show can truly be complete without The Spirit Of Radio. For encore material, another standard - the glorious Tom Sawyer - and a bit more of 2112 than usual: Overture, Temples Of Syrinx and the highly appropriate Grand Finale to conclude the evening... and a good time had very much been had by all!

Messers Lee, Lifeson and Peart have been in the business for decades, but they were on top form on Thursday night, and show little sign of flagging. It may be something of a challenge to match the recent studio material, but their shows continue to impress. A job well done, gentlemen, and I salute you!

The Final Verdict... An excellent show, maybe just slightly lacking in older and newer material, but showcasing the band's first true concept album in fine style. 8.5/10

Oh, and there was a fantastic surprise in my special package goodie-bag...

Just one more concert, and my "Gap Year" Task 90 can be crossed off the list - B52's, anyone...?

And so...

...as promised...

...the low-down on Operation Rush Hour...!

The day began on the other side of the country, with an early start and a bus-journey that went in surprisingly swiftly. That done, it was time to "hit those streets a-runnin'", and make my way to my venue-neighbouring hotel. Some relaxed shopping back in the city centre again, it was time to return, and prepare. And then...

Showtime.

review and more pics! )

The Bottom Line! Rush deliver, with a great set hitting more of the "high notes" than 2007. Long may they reign! 8.5/10

Aaaaaand, I'm done.

Okay, I'm back! First of all, the important stuff...

continues - a meeting of minds seems to be the only way to put The Traveller's plan into effect, while inside the Reignforge, Brighthawk and Lord Fh'ane have plans of their own...

Development News... I managed to get some writing done on the "there-and-back", which further defines the post-REIGNFALL "state of play". It'll be very interesting to see how that develops - and that's what "Work Slot 2" will hopefully allow me to work on. Starting tomorrow...

Now, How Was Saturday...? Well, Mission Task 90 is now three fifths completed
90 - Go to at least five concerts (3/5)
- Kiss - Glasgow SECC - 9th May 2010
- Seasick Steve - Perth Concert Hall - 1st August 2010
- Rush - Glasgow SECC - 14 May 2011
and bloody good it was too. A full report will follow tomorrow - I'm still recovering, and I've got photos to sort through. Gimme a break, willya?

Oh, and I just watched Doctor Who - Season 6, Episode 3 - The Doctor's Wife. Best episode this season as far as emotion and background "colour" is concerned! 8.5/10. More in-depth later...

Operation Rush Hour is go.

I'll be catching up with the rest of the world again on Sunday...
patentdragon: (Default)
Okay, it's story post time, as

continues - The Traveller and his companions prepare for their part in the plan to liberate Mystalorn... Brighthawk makes some new friends... and there are some welcome new arrivals on Darkhawk's side of The Emperor's barrier!

Development News... Slow progress again, but a section of Chapter 2 is done. I do have something a little more urgent on my mind right now, namely Operation Rush Hour, and I still have stuff to pack...

Talking of which... According to the latest set-list for the current tour, there are still *gasp* a few songs I'm not familiar with... and once again, that lack of availability for Amazon MP3 download gift cards rears its ugly head. If I have time before the show (and I certainly expect to), I may just check every possible outlet for said cards, and grab a decent-sized one at the first opportunity. I enjoy being able to get music (almost) instantly, and without the hassle of checking out!

However, the balance on my existing card just got almost halved as I tracked down a song from my "Must Track This Down" list - a cracking version of Thin Lizzy's classic "Emerald" by folk-metal band Skyclad...

Meanwhile... Yay - Grandmaster Bushido for Thrax, and all done last night, despite the thankfully brief UO server down-time. That's one landmark of several attained!

Okay, time for more Mission prep. Be posting later to keep the streak alive while I'm out of town!

All of a sudden, I rediscovered the fun in Ultima Online - training up a samurai, with a view to creating the monster-slaying juggernaut that is a "sampire" (top-of-the-line samurai with added Necromancy). That's not an excuse for reduced writing output - that's really the result of not really knowing where the new Season is going so far. I so desperately want to avoid the "take a deep breath, then back to intergalactic war" kind of thing, and so the way forward doesn't exactly pave itself. A "plotting weekend" may be required - this weekend might work, as there's a Grand Prix coming up, and most likely some limited Saturday Move-stuff.

Next weekend, of course, is right out, 'cause I'll be out of town, on a "Mission mission" - yup, it'll be time for "Operation Rush Hour". I am still working on TDD-701 "A Star Is Rising", as that's "prologue" of a sort - "cool-down" from REIGNFALL, one might say.

There are other stories to tell, which don't depend on anything being written in the form of "bridging" material, but still I need to thrash out a few ideas. Stay tuned for some interesting developments!

Meanwhile... Just ordered myself something I guess could be called a "complete REIGNFALL on schedule" present, and my loooooong search for "street boots" might just be over...

It's a bit weird today - I'm still energised by yesterday, but when I sit down, boy am I tired. THOR gets a full big-screen week starting Friday, so I might just go and see it again on my birthday... :)

The Weekend Of Madness may be over, but where to go from here? There are certainly a good crop of blockbusters still to come, but what else can I cram into the summer? Are we looking at a Summer Of Madness?

I have craft things in mind - I made a set of Emotional Spectrum "prayer beads" in preparation for Green Lantern (June 17), and there is still a couple of Mission tasks along those lines...
51 - Create something to sell, and sell it!
52 - Complete some craft projects I've started
84 - Learn to make my own paper...
85 - ...and make my own books!
91 - Create a "personal goddess"
94 - Make a PD-worthy pair of boots from scratch!
97 - Build a diddley bow
Still got Rush in three weeks, remember (Task 90)... oh, and no CLAN to fanny things up!

Development News... There's every chance I might just have TDD-701: After The Fall finished before REIGNFALL even starts posting! There wasn't a great deal of writing done today - I actually managed to do more yesterday - but progress is progress, and the rest of the story is pretty much writing itself on the scaffolding of pre-planned story threads. A bit more work tonight will push things ahead, maybe even reach completion...

..."I love it when a plan comes together!"

Received... Rush ticket!
Booked... THOR seat for Bank Holiday Monday!

Aaaaaand relax - a step closer for each of Mission 101 Tasks 90 and 98!

Development News... Strong progress for TDD-701: After The Fall again today, with another event I've had in mind for... years finally committed to hard drive.

Meanwhile, stay tuned for the first step on the last leg of the journey to REIGNFALL...

Heh - our "visitors" may be homeward bound, and the "Dwelling Place" in the process of dismantling, but I'm going to have to wait a while before I get to "take it easy". Of course, I'm talking about my weekend excursion, beginning tomorrow, during which I'll doing some more points-scoring for my Mission 101, by way of
19 - Visit five cities not on my regular "list"
90 - Go to at least five concerts
I really do want to put the last two weeks behind me, and redirect my energies for trying times ahead. The path should be smoothed some by the phone call we received last night, which seems to bring the most difficult chapter of recent years to a close at last. "The Move" draws closer - it may be sooner than I expect, and that may be for the best.

Tomorrow should be fun. I hope. It'll be a stripped-down operation, with no computer or internet access, but I'm okay with going "low-tech". I may even *gasp* get some writing done...!

Did the i.Resist 2010 campaign get through to someone who could actually do something about the CLAN noise levels? This weekend has been surprisingly quiet, bar a couple of occasions - Saturday evening, and this morning - and in all honesty, I can't exactly say, on the basis of how things are right now, that my summer has been ruined. Doesn't mean I can't keep monitoring things, courtesy of the upgraded i-resist.co.uk.

Let's hope things remain that way. I'm at work until the latest reports are done, then I take a break in the lead-up to clocking up the second of my five Mission 101 concerts. If things stay essentially peaceful, I can declare Task 79
79 - Protest against CLAN
completed, and focus on more meaningful endeavours, like Perth the Sunday after...

Pity Task 66
66 - Get back into the habit of properly balancing my finances
is on slightly rocky ground right now. The latest credit card bill was a little bit surprising. Ooops.

Talking of which...

- my THEPatentDragon.com promotional minicards from Moo.com!

And finally... Felipe Massa was ROBBED.

...7...
i.Resist 2010 Update...
79 - Protest against CLAN
Things are picking up pace now. I've changed my style of banner, which won't now require me to fiddle about with TWO pieces of sheet, my flyer for local delivery is taking shape, I've even ordered an "add-on" domain to point to the page hosted at THEPatentDragon.com - over the next week, I'll be photocopying flyers, buying paint, painting a banner, delivering flyers, setting up my camp, attending the Community Engagement meeting...

Busy busy busy...

Oh, and work, of course. It's been suggested to me that I could take some "time off" as my bosses both find themselves "out of the office" at the same time. Think I might just take them up on that, and have a week to cover both the majority of the protest period AND the aftermath of my Perth excursion.

So that's FIVE Mission 101 Tasks I can either complete, or make solid progress with in the next two weeks:
19 - Visit five cities not on my regular "list"
23 - Camp outside at least once
52 - Complete some craft projects I've started
79 - Protest against CLAN
90 - Go to at least five concerts
Crikey O'Reilly...

And I may just have an idea for another task. More soon!

Mission 101 Update... Okay, that's official:
90 - Go to at least five concerts
will be brought right up to speed on August 1st, courtesy of the Perth Concert Hall, and "The Dog Hisself" Seasick Steve. Travel, accommodation, ticket - all dealt with last night. Yay!

Also, there's already the possibility of a THIRD concert, now that Rush are to release a new album next year, and are kicking off a big Canadian/US tour at the end of June. I'd certainly want to see them again after the "Snakes And Arrows" Tour...

I love it when a plan comes together.

In Today's Episode... trouble is brewing as the race nears its conclusion, and even Mane-of-Night is going to struggle to deal with it...

Development News... Not a lot to report on that front right now, but I should be getting some writing in tonight (possible), or on Sunday (call that "highly likely").

THEPatentDragon.com News... I set up a "Wish List" at the Core blog, but dammit, am I struggling to find sources for items to add to it! That ate up quite a chunk of time - as did trying to track down images I'd been working on for special site promo cards from Moo.com. Just found them a few minutes ago...
57 - Design and establish new personal web-site, with actual content

Also... What's this? Seasick Steve in Perth in August? Could this be the second of my minimum five gigs for Mission 101...?
90 - Go to at least five concerts

And finally... Okay, who's the dick at (Channel) Five who messed with the timing of CSI-NY so that it overlapped with the first of tonight's Prison Break double-bill...? Step forward for a slap in tha noots.
