And so...

...as promised...

...the low-down on Operation Rush Hour...!

The day began on the other side of the country, with an early start and a bus-journey that went in surprisingly swiftly. That done, it was time to "hit those streets a-runnin'", and make my way to my venue-neighbouring hotel. Some relaxed shopping back in the city centre again, it was time to return, and prepare. And then...

Showtime.

Merchandised up, it's time to take your seat, and let Canada's finest take over. Rush are more than able to laugh at themselves, as their big-screen videos showed on the last tour, but this time, the laughs were kept to a minimum, at the start of each half of the show, and before lights-up at the end - but we're getting ahead of ourselves. One quirky introduction over, the band hit the stage for Spirit Of Radio, and we're off!

Early in the set, a personal favourite - Mane-of-Night theme-song Workin' Them Angels (in progress below)

and the emphasis on more recent material continued with another Snakes And Arrows stand-out, Faithless, and new song BU2B before dipping a little deeper into the back catalogue for crowd favourite Freewill, and finishing off the first half of the set with slightly more recent material, in the form of personal future favourites Marathon and Subdivisions. A set I'd call an improvement on last time, but the best is yet to come...

The Time Machine Tour is based on one key highlight - the performance, for the first time, of the whole of 1981's classic album Moving Pictures, source of several fan-favourites - Traveller theme Tom Sawyer, the rip-roaring Red Barchetta, much-loved instrumental YYZ, big fave Limelight, the last "epic" The Camera Eye...

and now the stage-show is really cooking as a breathtaking spider-like light-rig makes its debut, descending and "writhing" to illuminate proceedings. Witch Hunt and XSI theme Vital Signs rounded off Moving Pictures as the set moved into its final phase. New track Caravan set the scene for Neil Peart's customary dazzling drum-solo, then we were treated to much loved classics from an era the band don't touch on half as much as they should - perennial sing-along Closer To The Heart and 2112 highlights Overture and Temples Of Syrinx. A splendid main set concludes with Snakes And Arrows opener Far Cry, and there's another chance to catch your breath before the band take to the stage one more time for epic instrumental La Villa Strangiato, and first album highlight Working Man - oh, and a tongue-in-cheek "backstage" movie to round things off...

Professional as always, a joy to behold - not even an iffy ear could detract from the pleasure of seeing one of my all-time favourite bands. Pass this way again, and I will be there!

The Bottom Line! Rush deliver, with a great set hitting more of the "high notes" than 2007. Long may they reign! 8.5/10
