Yay! It's Blockbuster Season...!
Pity there's a pretty thin crop this year. However, the fight for top movie could already have been won...
Review: Iron Man 2 It's been two years since the Golden Avenger made his debut on the big screen, and a lot of people have been waiting for this movie, the first of three BIG steps to the set-to-be-colossal Avengers in 2012. The very last seconds of Iron Man set the tone with the appearance of Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), and mention of "The Avenger Initiative", and yes, there's more of that - and Fury - in this movie, but that's not the focus of events, as we see rigth from the rather low-key start.
Revenge is a big factor in this movie, as the Stark family's past history catches up with our hero, putting his vision for a new world peace in jeopardy. Enemies come thick and fast, and they don't have to be super-villains or military robots - business rival Justin Hammer, the US Government, even Tony's own creations...
Robert Downey Jr is fantastic once again, bringing an energy to the part of Tony Stark that other actors would truly struggle to match - and that energy makes his frailties even more pronounced, especially when he can't find it in himself to share his troubles with those around him. The only person he can turn to, through Fury and his "arachnid cohort", is his father...
Don Cheadle takes over in the role of Tony's friend in the military, James Rhodes, and he has plenty more to do than his predecessor, most of it behind an armoured face-plate. The friendship takes some whacks, but when the chips are down (almost literally)... well, just go and see the movie, and find out for yourself. It's quite a ride, and once again, head-man Jon Favreau delivers in admirable style - he even gives himself more to do in this role as "Happy" Hogan!
Marvel's movies have risen to a whole new level since they were brought "in house" - the company get the people they want, the money those people need, and we get the stories we want. Their batting average is very, VERY good so far, and that bodes well for the future - although next year brings the real challenge: THOR. It's been a particularly tricky business bringing myth-based characters to any kind of screen, and Thor is going to be a particularly tricky character to fit in Marvel Movies's "real world" universe - you can believe in a webslinging teenager, a man with a raging monster dwelling inside him, and even a man in a suit of flying armour - but a Norse god with a hammer? Well, the first piece of that puzzle is already in place - just watch Iron Man 2 to the very end of the credits...!
The Low-Down: Enjoyed the first one? Here comes more of the same, and a bit more thrown in. STAY TO THE VERY, VERY END. The Road To "Avengers" really begins here! 8.5/10
*Reaches for the Mission 101 List...*
