The Mission Gap Year List - The Mission Gap Year List

The What...? The whole world-shaking business of moving house last year played havoc with my Mission 101, which concluded on 28th September, so I decided to take a "gap year", and see what I could do with an extra 12 months...

September and October... Early days on the "gap year", so just about everything is still in the planning stages, although I do now have critical materials for Task 94
94- Make a PD-worthy pair of boots from scratch!
I'm hoping to have a better handle on the whole scheme before the next update...

January - February - March - April - May - June - July - August...

Okay, that's the last full month over and done with - and in the space of one week, there have been several successes!

The source for my SCOREs had been a five-night, six-day trip to London, which has given me a total length of "away from home" time to Task 22 - Spend one full week away from home. I already knew that another Task was guaranteed for success during the trip - Task 27 - See one stage show a year - when we went to see the truly incredible War Horse - the film is excellent, but it just doesn't compare to the stage show, which convinced Spielberg to go ahead with the movie.

Go see it. You will not be disappointed.

Third SCORE was Task 72 - See an aardvark in the flesh. The fast-asleep flesh, at London's Regents Park Zoo. Twice...

Pity the two of them don't count double. I'm starting to see a pattern now - the animals I go specially to see are asleep - remember the binturongs in Edinburgh (Task 73)? - and I will always get a photo of a tiger's backside, vanishing into the undergrowth...

Other progress hasn't been so easy to come by, however, but over the next couple of days, I intend to see just what I can achieve in what little time is left. Fifty-one completed tasks - half-way - remains the target, but I am already preparing for the inevitable penalty pay-out of Task 82 - Give £1 to charity for every task not completed, and an additional £10 for every 10 not completed. Fifty tasks not completed equals a £100 pay-out, and with the £10 I gave to the zoo's tiger preservation programme, I have paid out the princely sum of £11. I need to ascertain which Tasks definitely won't get done, and start paying out for them pretty soon if Task 82 is to be finished on time - and the completion of that could end up saving me £10.

I feel a time-loop coming on.

In Closing... Next stop, boys and girls - the final round-up. I am still considering my "gap year" project, which I will most likely start at New Year, in an attempt to make up for the time "thrown into the grinder" by moving house.

Keep the faith, people!

There is, unfortunately, nothing to report. The roof work, and the accompanying "summer" weather have thrown everything out of whack, and now that that piece of maintenance work is done, there's plenty more to do, and a holiday to plan...

The 50% target stands. I intend to hit that target, but work still needs to be done. The holiday presents several opportunities, including at least one that will give me a completed Task, but more effort will be required as the last full month begins... maybe the approaching deadline will help me recapture some of that enthusiasm and energy that I had when I started this whole project.

The Good News... Task 8 Task 8, as I predicted last time, has changed from an "in progress" to a *SCORE*, as previously recorded. Only one strawberry plant has produced edible fruit so far, but the other two are working on it, I can assure you.

The Not-So-Good News... I'm now into the last two and two-thirds months of my Mission, and it's not looking good. Now that the house is getting its essential roof-work done, things are in a mess, and my organisational faculties are trashed. I can only focus on those Tasks I know I can complete, and hope for some luck along the way - a 50% completion target is the plan.

Wish me luck.

The strawberries are doing fine...

...so Task 8
8 - Grow my own vegetables(/fruit)
is heading for completion - and I even have pumpkin seeds in pots, which I hope will grow and can be planted out soon. The rain we've been having has certainly helped, but I have been checking on them regularly, watering them when necessary - the only problem I can foresee is that they may already be outgrowing their container...

Talking of completion, I have *SCORE*s to report, in that I have got my new passport, thus completing Task 18
18 - Renew my passport
and May 22nd saw the last of the days in question for
65 - Celebrate each and every Spiritwalk (May 22) and Patent Saturday (December 1) like they really mean something (which they do!)
I didn't quite throw a party each time, or anything like that, but there are several notable events, and I did take each day off, and I can't think I can make a day any more special than that.

The passport means I am all set for August, and the first proper holiday I've had in quite some time. This has the potential to yield quite a few *SCORE*s. Task 27
27 - See one live stage show a year
will be completed when we go to see War Horse, and the opportunities to polish off several others also present themselves, the Tasks in question being
22 - Spend at least one full week away from home (whichever it is)
55 - Take more photographs
72 - See an aardvark in the flesh
75 - Hand-feed an exotic wild/zoo animal
77 - Get "up close and personal" with some birds of prey
- for a start!

In closing... I only have FOUR of these reports left to do, and that's rather scary. I'm targeting a 50% completion rate, once the "all Mission long" Tasks pay off, and given that I've had regular paid work and a house-move to contend with, that's not too bad. One thing I have definitely learned is that I have a tendancy to start things with enthusiasm, only to never actually complete them, so that's probably going to be Task 1 for my next list...
1 - Don't leave things you've started unfinished!
That's my current Task 11
11 - Prepare a second Mission 101 list!
kicked off then...

I have Task completions to report! My Task involving exploring laser eye surgery has been declared "completed", as I've come to the conclusion it simply isn't for me - cross Task 10 off "The List" - and Task 96 - "Watch the original Prisoner in its entirety" has been completed at last, after a strong start and several attempts to complete thereafter falling on stony ground. This weekend, I made the final push!

There are a lot of Tasks that were added to this list on the assumption that I'd have a LOT more free time than I presently do, and whilst I certainly have the funds to carry out many of them now, I just don't seem to have the time. A lot of my travel Tasks have suffered as a result, that's for certain - I actually found out this month that the one city I had marked down for Task 19 - "Visit 5 cities not on my usual list" wasn't officially a city until it got the Royal seal of approval as part of the Queen's 60th Jubilee... but I'm still counting it.

So, what else is there that I can report positively on? How about Task 51 - "Create something to sell, and sell it!"? That is half-done, as I have a number of paracord bookmarks made - now all I need is the opportunity and/or the means to sell even ONE. Anyone interested...?

Tune in next month - will I have any more success to report? Maybe...

There is nothing to report. I have achieved nothing this month. Four weeks has never seemed so short. I have no excuses. Yesterday was probably the first time this month that I even looked at my list.

I need to change that - especially if I seriously intend to start a new Mission after this one ends. Yes, my current list was created at a point in my life when I had no idea what was just around the corner (and by that I mean continual employment), and I had no idea I'd be moving house during my Mission's duration.

I can still complete Tasks. I simply need to apply myself. I very much hope I'll have better news next time.

January...

Apart from staring to watch The Prisoner (11 out of 17 episodes so far) [ Task 96 ], and a couple more classic movies [ Task 28 ], I have pretty much failed to make any progress. I've been pretty much overwhelmed by moving house, and this month hasn't given me much opportunity to just sit down and do stuff - I've been back to work, and had a dose of that lingering cold that's been going around. Yeah, sounds like a bunch of excuses, but unfortunately those are the facts.

I'm disappointed with myself for letting things slip. I keep telling myself that things will look a whole lot better when I reach September 28th, and the Mission-long Tasks start paying off, but they'd look even better if I had some other completions to add to those, and maybe complete 50% of my Tasks. I will be re-organising my online Task list into Done, In Progress, To Be Started, and Failed by next report day - and hopefully, that will allow me to get my head around things again.

Any advice and encouragement will, of course, be most welcome...

Completed... Well, I spent enough on it to count Task 83
83 - Get a good, solid, long-lasting office chair!
as completed, as of last week. Whether or not the item in question is up to the job, we shall see...

Advanced Patent Saturday 2011 was a big success, involving a luxurious two-night stay at the best hotel in town. This moves Task 65
65 - Celebrate each and every Spiritwalk (May 22) and Patent Saturday (December 1) like they really mean something (which they do!)
one step closer to - and one step away from - completion. Now, what can I possibly do in May - can I top PatSat '11? Dare I try...?

I'm picking up on my "classic movies" recently, with Scrooge (1951) and The Man Who Would Be King (1975) to add to the list. I have fallen a bit behind, but I mean to remedy that. New Year, new motivation - and talking of which...

2011 In Review... The year just passed started in hopeful fashion, but once I hit the summer, and "The Move", the Mission stalled pretty badly. Some Tasks have reached completion without too much effort, and others that run until "end-of-Mission" have progressed pretty much automatically, and will give me a good, strong dose of completions come September 28th. 100% Mission completion isn't going to happen - but then I hardly expected to achieve that lofty goal when I started, and anything I don't complete can be carried over to Mission II...

I've been toying with several "Push Lists" since The Move, with varying degrees of success. One of the first things I'll be doing this year is lining up Tasks I know I can complete if I spend the time to get them done. So little time, so much to do.

Jan - Feb - Mar - Apr - May - Jun - Jul - Aug - Sep - Oct - November...

Last month - good progress. This month - well, not so good...

I have no full *SCORE*s to report, but I have managed to chalk up some "field goals" that count towards a few of my multi-part Tasks. Take, for instance, Task 27...
27 - See one stage show a year
and Task 88...
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects

First up, Task 27, and a thoroughly enjoyable evening with The Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers at The Byre Theatre in St Andrews - it counts as a stage show, and not a concert, as there was dinner beforehand! An entirely European troupe of drummers, these guys and girls made an awesome sound that quite literally made the venue shake!

The Task 88 "mini-*SCORE*" comes in the form of "Mane-of-Night's dancing bells" - items that actually haven't made their first appearance in her adventures! Here they are, modelled by yours truly...

...and here are a couple of close-ups, modelled by Sri Devi... )...and they do make a decent noise.

So, what else is there...? I'm late in making my Mission report because I've been attending to another "Tasklet" over the first two days of the month. December 1st is Patent Saturday, my personal "independence day", and arranging that has eaten up quite a bit of my November Task-wrangling time. Christmas is coming, and so bang goes some more free time - but that's not an excuse. I will be exploring Task-completing options this month, with a view to having a healthier report next time not counting the *FAIL* already called on Task 14...

So many Tasks are down to just ONE "mini-*SCORE*" from completion, there are GUARANTEED to be some finished Tasks over the next few months. For now, let's just focus on December...

Let's get straight to the good news...

SCORE The First...

Photographic evidence...! )

Task 73 - See a binturong in the flesh on Saturday at Edinburgh Zoo. Both of them were, unfortunately asleep the whole time, but I can confirm that binturong musk DOES indeed smell like hot buttered popcorn!

And then there's...

SCORE The Second...

Photographic evidence...! )

Task 52 - Complete some craft projects I've started This one's been hanging around for a couple of years, but at last it's done, and this Task is a most welcome *SCORE*

Yup, there you have it - TWO Tasks completed this month, after several months of struggling. There's less than a year to go now, and I really don't think I'll complete every Task, thanks in part to the chaos this summer, and thanks in part to some over-enthusiasm on my part. Anything that doesn't get completed will go into my NEXT list...

Looking promising for impending *SCORE*s... It's not impossible that I could complete my diddley bow (Task 97 - Build a diddley bow) before Christmas, and the same could be said for my "Personal Goddess" (91 - Create a "personal goddess"). Come December, I'll also get my last shot at 14 - Take Mum to the Christmas performance of Handel's Messiah at least once, which I'm thinking is going to be effectively an "extra point shot".

Add to these several more Tasks in progress, and the Tasks that are Mission-long, and I'm thinking I can hit 50% - at least that's my bare-minimum target. I hope that doesn't sound in any way defeatist...

I now have just less than a year left, but progress isn't easy to come by, as far as completed Tasks are concerned. I don't have anything like the free time I had when I started my Mission...

Ah hell, let's just get on with it.

SCORE! Yes, I have completed a Task! That Task is
85 - ...and make my own books!
and here's the first result!

96 pages, A7 size, with a double-layered leather cover - a simpler project than the one I started with, which has fallen foul of just about anything that could go wrong. I'm probably trying to run before I can walk. I will be creating more books in the future, and not just because there's one I started, but haven't yet finished.

In Progress... I'm keeping up with my "monthly" Tasks, buying books and cooking dinners. The diddley bow project
97 - Build a diddley bow
is closer to acoustic completion, but I'm still to investigate the electrification options; meanwhile
91 - Create a "personal goddess"
has taken a step forward, as I sketch out what I have in mind, and start sourcing the materials I'm going to need.
88 - Create usable stage/screen/cosplay props of three pieces of costume or equipment from my own projects
is further ahead, as I now have components for Prop 1, and a possible
foundation for Prop 2...

Coming Soon... I want to double my number of completed Tasks by the end of the year. I know I have several that will be declared completed at Mission's End if I keep my present pace, but I need more successes from my "one-shots". Plans are in motion to push ahead with a number of these, and I'll be formalising a list soon.

Things ARE happening, but they REFUSE to be rushed...

I blew it. I have no completions to report, and yes, that makes me a liar. I have made some progress on several Tasks:-

- *mini-SCORE!* On 7th July, I completed my second year of 100 hours of outdoor walks, all thanks to being at work. Given that I did 165 last year, I only have to do TWO more after today to average one hundred for the three years of my Mission. That doesn't, however, mean that I'm going to take things easy in 2012. Far from it!

And the rest... )

And finally...

Task 85 - ...and make my own books! was supposed to be my "ace-in-the-hole", but I screwed up the one I was working on last night. However, I have plenty of materials to have several more tries, I know where and how I went wrong - and this Task WILL be completed this month! This, and at least one other...

That's about all I can think of right now, and the day is drawing to a close - I can actually hear owls outside (tawny owls, I believe). I hope to have better news next month!
patentdragon: (Default)
Hold everything! I forgot something! In the hurry to post news of all things I didn't quite manage to complete this past month, I managed to completely miss the fact that yes, I did complete a task after all!

Well, take a look at this...

Jan - Feb - Mar - Apr - May - Jun - July...

July has still been a month dominated by moving-related matters, but I have been able to make some progress, albeit not to the point of actually completing any Tasks this month. So, let's see what's been happening...

Task 17 - See more of Jan Given that my nephew is now next door, I can't hardly fail on this. We have semi-regular meetings over the garden wall, and in-depth discussions on things such as nettles and dinosaurs.

Task 59 - Learn to upgrade PCs I "broke my duck" on this one by finally taking the plunge, and extracting a hard drive from my very first PC, for installation in a USB enclosure, making it into an admittedly small external drive. It worked - after a certain amount of frustration - and my confidence with hardware has just had a considerable boost!

I can take bits out without a panic - but can I put parts in? I'm looking to get a new PC as a full-scale upgrade in the very near future, but it'd be worth seeing if I can take my current machine a step or two closer to being more up-to-date.

Task 83 - Get my chair fixed! The chair in question is history. It was stripped of any useful parts, and sent to the dump. I will now be looking for a new, quality office chair, as I'm not entirely sure I'm going to inherit the second of the pair any time soon...

Task 97 - Build a diddley bow I have the "two by four", and several of the non-electrical pieces, and in a week or two, I'll go and see if I can get the necessary electrics at the nearest music shop (which happens to be out of town).

Task 98 - See each of the "Avengers" cycle of movies on opening day! (Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011), Captain America - The First Avenger (2011), Avengers (2012)) I saw Captain America - The First Avenger on Friday - the UK opening day - and that means I only have Avengers to see when that opens, and this task is COMPLETE!

And (almost) finally...

Could I perhaps stretch it a little and say that Task 6 - Save lie-ins for weekends is complete? For about half the duration of my Mission, I have been working, and so I simply don't have the choice about lie-ins any more. Technically, I should only call this complete on the final day, but I rather doubt I'll be out of work any time before then. Opinions would be appreciated on the matter.

And finally finally... I WILL be completing Tasks in August! I PROMISE.

January - February - March - April - May - June...

And the score is... Let's get straight down to the bad news.

TASK FAILED - Task 64 Complete The Move without any serious drama. This was, in all honesty, doomed before I even started my Mission. There was just too much stuff to shift, and thin out. On the day we were due to hand over the keys, at noon, we only managed to lock the door of Number 99 for the last time at 0345 that morning. Tempers got a little frayed now and then, and we were so tired the next day that we had a bit of a "fender bender", losing a headlight in the process. I think we can call that a *FAIL*, don't you?

I have already paid my £1 charity penalty, to The Fishermans Mission when we ate out earlier that week.

Better News... I have at last COMPLETED my list, promoting my "Task 102" to a full list Task, as Task 100 - Take one last midnight walk round the neighbourhood. This I completed on the 4th, not long before the run-up to The Move. It's a kind of personal thing, which not everyone will "get"...

...and I even took a camera. )

My final Task is 101 - Keep my new bedroom and office CLEAN AND TIDY! So far, I'm managing to do that, but the office may get more cluttered as the moved stuff is relocated for sorting and pruning. I will do my best to keep on top of this.

As far as other Tasks go, I'm struggling with several "monthlies" in the wake of The Move, but I am keeping my head above water as far as Task 29 - Buy a book a month from a real bookshop is concerned. 70 - Re-organise my notice-board is properly underway, now that it's been taken down, thinned out and Moved - a Task that I can definitely complete by the next Update.

I haven't seen my Edinburgh Zoo binturong yet for Task 73, as I really haven't had the energy for a trip out of town. This is on my "Must Do This Summer" list, and I will try to find an opening in July.

In closing... Not a stellar level of success, but I have filled out my list, and admitted a crashing FAIL. There is still so much to do, so much to tidy up - and probably a heap more stuff to throw out. Wish me luck...
patentdragon: (Default)
And so, After The Fall reaches its conclusion.

Moments to treasure, moments to fear - and this is but the beginning of how things are going to be from now on...

Release Notes... Expect Season Seven to continue very soon!

Meanwhile... Crap. Nettle stings. And all on my mouse-hand. Guess I won't be doing much tonight then - except maybe researching gardening gloves. Oh, and maybe a games console to double as a DVD/BluRay player, which I am really starting to need, now that I have a 32" TV at hand (ouch)

I am so desperately trying to make a life here at the "new" (heh) house, but the place doesn't seem to like me much. Our pestilential adversaries have just doubled in species, not that I can mention that to the house-owner without being made to feel that a) I'm bringing it up just to make their life more miserable, and b) it's somehow my fault.

Fine. I'll pay to have it all fixed. Happy? I want to make this work, and not just because I have nowhere else to go. There are some neighbours who have been owing me money for years now - maybe it's time they forked over some cash...

Ah, screw it. Going to watch some DVDs now, on whatever equipment is available. I got the collected edition of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr's Kick Ass comic yesterday as my "book-a-month" (and just in time, too), and a pretty powerful piece of work it is. I'm not a fan of the "grim and gritty", so typical of British comic creators, but this was impressive stuff - teenage loser decides to become a superhero, and that's about as good as it gets for him. Brutal... Score: 8.5/10

Mission Update... is coming tomorrow. I'm not in the mood.

And the score is... Even worse than April - but with good reason. What was a distinct possibility - moving house - became a definite in May, and has been dominating things these last few weeks - and how those weeks have sped by. I haven't had time to consider making any substantial Mission progress - and yes, I do feel bad about it.

I do have a mini-*SCORE* or two to report, however. I clocked up my third concert for Task 90 - Go to five concerts, seeing Rush in Glasgow on May 14th (click for the review!) This is a Task I can definitely complete on schedule, if not well before - that is, so long as the relevant opportunities present themselves.

I've also "broken ground" on Task 49 - Create "covers" for each complete "season" of each project, producing a title page for Season 7 of Dominion/The Darkhawk Diaries.

So, what next...? I will have completed Tasks to report next month. I have it on good authority that Edinburgh Zoo has binturongs, for a start (as in Task 73 - See a binturong in the flesh)...

Tune in next month to see if I manage to stay true to my word.
