Welcome to the January 2010 Mission Update!

Tasks completed
68 - Forgive charity shops... (16-01-2010)
- A period of "work experience" at a local charity shop in 2007 deeply coloured my opinion of such establishments. You get that when you're the only male in the place, and get treated like a beast of burden, who's only ever thanked when he gets out of the way. That was, however, only one shop, which I shall never return to - and which always has signs in the window for volunteers. Guess they can't hang on to staff - surprise surprise.

There's a follow-on task (see below) that is already in progress...

78 - Build a kick-ass snowman (09-01-2010)
- See the blog post for more on this.

86 - Properly organise (and chronicle) my efforts!
- This is half-done, in that my list is now numbered. The "chronicle" part is a continual work in progress.

Tasks In Progress

1 - Lose a meaningful amount of weight
- Not got a set amount yet, but the idea is to attain a "visible loss".

2 - Eat more sensibly
- Doing just that. I have the snacks under control - now to find more veg and fruit I enjoy.

3 - Complete at least 100 worthwhile walks (at least one hour outdoors) a year (8/100, 0/100, 0/75)
- The weather doesn't exactly encourage this, but I know I can do this.

9 - Cook dinner at least once a month (1/33)
- And pretty successfully, too (smoked haddock, potatoes and mixed beans). Already having ideas for next time.

26 - Get more familiar with my home town - street names and the like
- I got a map.

28 - Watch one "classic" film a month (1/33+1)
- Doctor Zhivago, with a bonus serving of Brighton Rock.

29 - Buy a book a month from an actual bookshop
- The Colour Of Magic - now to wait on my discount card (applied for online)...

39 - Learn some Na'vi
- Just broke into this task by trying to piece together a (very) rough translation of the oath of the Blue Lantern Corps. Not a major thing, but a start nonetheless.

42 - Get comic orders in more promptly (1/33)
- Meaning at least a week before the due date. January's already dealt with.

43 - Stop watching so much repeat crap on Dave
- There's only so much old Top Gear and QI a person can watch...

45 - Make regular progress on current and forthcoming "projects"
- Already posting chapters for the latest "episode" of The Darkhawk Diaries, with plenty more planned.

63 - Do some more RP in Ultima Online
- Just got involved in some zoological research for Trinsic (Europa)...

69 - ...and visit them regularly for useful materials and items
- Charity shops, that is. I not only bought something, but I donated the change, too.

70 - Re-organise my notice-board
- Kinda by accident. Stuff fell off it at the weekend. Might as well go the whole hog now.

86 - Properly (organise and) chronicle my efforts!
- See 86 in the Done List.

90 - Go to at least five concerts (0/5)
- One is already in the works for May...

Tasks Explained...
I've already covered Objective 68, one that would get most people going "huh?" 91 - Create a "personal goddess" will certainly raise some eyebrows, but I'm still to get the concept properly fixed in my own mind. It's an art idea, which I'm hoping to expand on when I revamp my personal website, hopefully soon - I want its meaning to be clear enough to inspire others to create their own. The idea of starting something like that from scratch is rather exciting.

So, how about 65 - Celebrate each and every Spiritwalk (May 22) and Patent Saturday (December 1) like they really mean something (which they do!)? These are two "personal holidays", celebrating important events in my life, and there are often presents involved, especially for Patent Saturday - which is so called whether December 1st falls on a Saturday or not. On these days, during my Mission and thereafter, I'd like to do something out of the ordinary - spend the night at a good hotel, or something like that. Something memorable...

In closing...
This is going to be quite a challenge, and so far, it's been a welcome one, motivating me in several avenues of life. I'm sure that, as the year progresses, the dominoes will start to fall - several batches of tasks can be dealt with in one go, at the right place and time (anyone know a zoo that has aardvarks, binturongs AND orcas?) Interesting times ahead.

Constructive comments are, of course, welcome. See you all next month!
