Blockbuster Season gets an early start this year - and WHAT a start! It's time for another step towards the next AVENGERS movie, and this time, we catch up with Captain America...
Almost every time one of Marvel's movies comes out, the bar is raised. Expectations get higher and higher - so what must people be expecting if this particular episode doesn't match those expectations? Marvel Studios have certainly satisfied THIS fan, and I can be pretty demanding!
Steve Rogers is finding his way in the modern world whilst working for SHIELD, but all is not well with the world's top secret agent outfit, as we soon find out on the streets of the US capital, and several assassins try to take out Nick Fury. For all the would-be killers' efforts, over a sequence that leaves you fighting for breath, it takes just one man - the Winter Soldier himself to end Fury's career, leaving friends and allies stunned - and the way clear for enemies old and new to turn a major SHIELD project into an invincible weapon.
So, it's Cap, Black Widow and new ally the Falcon against... well, just about everyone they thought was a friend, with stakes higher than they've ever been. There are no thunder gods this time, or billionaire playboys in armour...
"AVENGERS 1.5"? Well, this movie certainly ranks alongside AVENGERS in cinematic scope, especially in the final act, as Cap and his team race to save millions from execution from on high, but there's also one heck of a journey to get to that point. Steve makes a new friend - and visits an old one in a scene that can truly be called heartbreaking as Cap's lost years show just how cruel they can be (excellent work from all involved) - and all throughout the shadowy menace of The Winter Soldier is not far away as we follow our heroes through quite simply the best storyline of a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie since... well, IRON MAN!
First-class action scenes? Check. Outstanding FX sequences? Check. Mind-boggling 3D? Naaah, not so much - I actually believe I'm becoming immune to it, in all honesty. The backdrop is fantastic, and against that, each and every one of the starring actors gets to either introduce their new characters in style, or expand their existing ones in the darkest and most "real world" of Marvel's recent productions. Believe me, people, this one almost tops all that came before it, and manages to set a good chunk of the scene for the next AVENGERS movie in the first end-credits cut-away - yes, Blockbuster Season has once again started with something that will be VERY heard to beat...!
The Final Verdict... The best of all of Marvel's second outings, expanding and challenging each and every one of the major characters. The stage is all but fully set for AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON - and how! 9/10
