Okay, so this thing seems to be "on" for now, so let's be quick about this...
Sucker Punch appears to be cursed. And that's not it's own fault.
It seems to have had some bad reviews, and didn't do stellar box-office in the States, so cinemas over here have been giving it the cold shoulder. That, sadly, is a real shame, because this movie is actually a lot of fun - popcorn fodder at times, with a deeper story than it gets credit for behind the multi-layered fantasy. "Sexist!!!" howl the media - but against WHICH gender? The female characters are "empowered", whilst all the male characters, apart from the "sensei", are dribbling, grabby sleaze-buckets, with their only glimpse of redemption coming at the very end of the movie. And if there was a "panty shot" in the fight scenes, I must've missed it!
The visuals are pretty stunning, helped by the juxtapositioning of anachronistic elements - a B24 bomber in a raid on a fantasy castle, a Huey helicopter in a heist on what appears to be a moon of Saturn, a suit of powered armour in World War I - as escapism takes hold. Yes, the film makers could have told a grim and gritty story about mental institutions, or dancers all but enslaved in a night club - or even told a story of babes just shooting things and blowing sh8 up - but to combine the three was, I guess you could say "adventurous".
Add an excellent soundtrack (so excellent, I went and BOUGHT IT), and you have a perfectly enjoyable blockbuster pre-season highlight. Methinks the critics want too much, such as photo-perfect CGI and every action conforming without fail to known, observed science - and that's part of the reason why I don't really have time for film reviews.
The verdict: A brave piece of film-making. Not "Citizen Kane", but solid, albeit a little dark, entertainment. All is not as it seems... 8/10
