...sorry, I couldn't resist thinking Nextwave when the Daleks and Cybermen started slagging each other off. Had me thinking about Machine Man's Celestial flashback in Nextwave #5.
So, without further ado, I present my Personal Ratings for this season:
The Christmas Invasion:
- DT's first outing; maybe too ambitious, and too festive...? Score: 3
New Earth:
- Nice use of Cassandra, with the body-swapping: "Oh god- I'm a chav!" - but still lacking a little. Score: 3
Tooth And Claw:
- Too much like a Scooby-Doo episode for my liking. Torchwood overshadowing seemed a bit strained. Score: 2
School Reunion:
- Touching to see Sarah Jane and K9 again. Tony Head was fun as the lead Krillitane, but the actual monsters again had a Scooby-Doo quality to them, which disappointed a little. Score: 4
The Girl In The Fireplace:
- Unexpectedly enjoyable. More character-driven, and the better for it. The final twist wasn't much of a surprise, but it was still effective. Score: 4
Rise Of The Cybermen:
- Another classic enemy "Earthised", but these Cybermen had star quality well deserving of a two-parter. Score: 4
The Age Of Steel:
- More Cybermen! Yay! Also featured some unexpected exploration of the consequences of being "upgraded". Score: 4
The Idiot's Lantern:
- Oh look - another historic moment saved by The Doctor. An anticlimax after the Cybermen two-parter. Score: 2
The Impossible Planet:
- Ominous, and maybe a bit too "Alien" / "The Thing", when it needed to be a little bit more distinctive. Score: 3.5
The Satan Pit:
- An improvement on the first part, with foreshadowing of things to come. There goes another big chunk of the FX budget... ;-) Score: 4
Love And Monsters:
- This could have been an ingenious change from the norm, starring "the other people", but why Peter Kay? A wasted opportunity - and I hope the Blue Peter competition winner wasn't disappointed by what they did with his creation... Score: 1.5
Fear Her:
- See "The Idiot's Lantern" - but the "enemy" was a nice concept. Score: 3
Army Of Ghosts:
- Kinda telegraphed the involvement of the Cybermen early on, but little damage was done. A minor spoiler slipped out before I saw this episode, but the cliffhanger appearance of the Daleks was still awesome. Score: 5
Doomsday:
- Whoohoo! Every fan's dream come true! Good to see any thought of an alliance swiftly dismissed as warfare ensued. Rose's fate was well handled, when it could have gone so wrong. A fun season finale marred only by the jarringly out-of-place final-scene lead-in to the next Christmas Special. Score: 5
Season Average: 3.43 / 5 - not bad for David's first season, but please cut back on the Earth-based episodes, and have more on other planets! Also, don't be afraid to be just a little bit more intelligent, as some stuff this year was rather predictable...
Meanwhile... Must address the writing deficit. The above is no excuse.
Back to work.
