Review: Doctor Who 5.2 "The Beast Below"...
Okay, the theme tune hasn't been fixed yet, but give them time...
Anyway - tonight's fare. Another story with a grotty spaceship *sighs*, but that's no reason to just dismiss the whole venture. There's a faint whiff of Season 1's "The Long Game" about this - a human colony/space station with an unpalatable secret - but you're hoping "The Moff" can keep this new season fresh. If you can actually hear half the dialogue.
Chunks of what I can only imagine was carefully-crafted dialogue was needlessly swamped by music. EVERY BLEEDING MOMENT OF SCREEN-TIME DOES NOT NEED A FRIGGING ACCOMPANIMENT! This story was very quickly ruined for me as a result - and I haven't managed to trash my hearing JUST yet.
Okay, bitching done; back to the episode. In the midst of the political in-jokes (very topical), The Doctor-Amy relationship develops a good deal this Saturday, and the age-old "last of the Time Lords" question crops up, and is swiftly dealt whilst Amy interestingly shows wisdom beyond her experience. Do I see a pocket watch in her past, errr, future...?
This would have been a quite satisfactory episode, leading up to Eleven's first BIG challenge next week (now surely that is something no-one can screw up - please?). Pity about the excessive music...
The Short Version: A fair enough "getting up to speed" episode, hampered by TOO MUCH MUSIC. 3/5
