Right - brace yourselves...

Doctor Who - "The Eleventh Hour"

Matt Smith is a great Doctor. One episode; ONE EPISODE is all it took to declare me SOLD on this fellow being an excellent choice - David Tennant didn't manage that (it took until "Girl In The Fireplace" for that). Meanwhile, new assistant/companion/human Karen Gillan is excellent - laden with attitude and not fluttering her eyelashes at The Doctor all the time... and she's Scottish! The whole "policewoman" thing was a hoot - not key to the story, and I think everyone could see where that was going when we saw that skirt...

Okay, the story. This wasn't quite a classic episode, but it was certainly a better first episode than "The Christmas Invasion"; not being bogged down in being a Christmas special made a heap of difference. There is some of the now seemingly compulsory foreshadowing in the form of that "crack in the universe" business, and the ominous warning given by Prisoner Zero - shades of "She is returning" - and it'll be interesting to see how Steven Moffat makes this different, surprising and cool.

However... yes, there is a "however" - what is not cool is that the new theme tune sucks. Yes, you read it right. Sucks. It completely fails to grab your attention in the way Season 4's theme went IT'S DOCTOR WHO NOW! THIS IS WHY YOU LONG FOR SATURDAYS! WATCH US ROOOOOOCCCKKKK!!!! Instead we got Lady Whatsherface's ring-tone. Not. Good. Enough.

Not that it'll stop me from watching. I can just get an MP3 of the Season 4 theme... and that'll be sorted.

The Lowdown: A solid start, setting this season in motion in great style - BUT the new theme tune has to go. Sorry. Even so, Saturdays just became a whole bunch of F.U.N. again. Thanks, Matt, Karen and Steven! 4/5

Sooooo, my Easter weekend hasn't been ruined utterly.
