And just when all seems to be going fine, there has to be a down-side...
Nicholas Courtney, better known as Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart in Doctor Who, has passed away. The voice of military reason to Jon Pertwee's flamboyant and outspoken Doctor, the Brigadier was a major player in my childhood, and provided no small inspiration for the character of Rhagaan "Rex" Tyrho, who currently features heavily in the climactic Episodes of Darkhawk Season Six. I had, in fact, just put pen to paper on the season finale when I came across the sad news, and it hit me kinda hard.
I can quite categorically say, hand on heart, that the fact that Rhagaan turned out to be royalty stems from the Brigadier - that air of authority was essential, but I never wanted "Rex" to be cold and clinical, like another contemporary commander, Ed Straker from UFO, played by Ed Bishop, who also not so long ago left us. There was something approachable about "The Brig" - he certainly had a really high "Picard Rating", which was put to the test almost every time he came out with the timeless line "(insert alien target), five rounds, rapid fire!"
Nicholas - Brigadier - thank you. Stand at - ease.
