Last year, Blockbuster Season started with the distinctly disappointing Spidey 3. This time round, it couldn't be more different...

Let's get straight to it: Iron Man is outstanding. From the "Fun-Vee" to "the Avenger Initiative" (What, you didn't stay to the very end?), this does not fail to do its job, and do it well. Our hero's origin doesn't overly dominate, and Stark gets into fine-tuning his original concept as soon as he gets home, and there's fun to be had as the potential tedium of building a suit of super-powered armour is executed in entertaining fashion, especially the "Yeah!" moment of the first full flight - loved the "control surfaces" in the Mark II suit!

There were a good few nods to the original material - "Jarvis", the brief flirtation with an all-gold colour-scheme, Rhodey taking a look at the Mark II suit and saying "Maybe next time..." - but that end-of-the-titles teaser with Samuel L. as Nick Fury was just the cherry on top. "Avenger Initiative" - yes please!

Final Judgement... This will be very hard to beat... and sorry, Cloverfield; good work, but you just picked the wrong year. Simply a king among superhero movies - 9 out of 10.

And that is all for this evening. Good night.
