It's Review Time... It's been one seriously LOOOOONG week, but here's the pay-off - Doctor Who, Season 6, Episode 2 - Day Of The Moon...

...or is it? There are a whole bunch of questions still unanswered...

...the biggest of which has to be who IS River Song? There was a suggestion that we were about to find out, at teh end of last season, but the question doesn't come up again this time round. Maybe it is addressed, albeit indirectly - when, at the episode's very end, the little girl who has been at the heart of the whole story regenerates...

Huh? Okay, stick with me on this - at the end of the "Silence In The Library" two-parter (Season 4), River offers herself up as RAM for The Library's computers, handcuffing The Doctor to prevent him from taking up the task himself, and saying (semi-quote) "you'll burn - and don't think you'll regenerate!" well, she never got the chance either. Last week, when River mentioned being "a frightened young girl" when she first met The Doctor - I think the little girl was pretty damn scared stuck in that Apollo space-suit.

Does this have anything to do with Amy's "on-off" pregnancy? Well, tune in to next week's edition of "River-Watch" to see how things develop! Now, back to the episode...

Episode 2 does start with a bit of an "everyone dies" sequence, but its execution (ooops) and pay-off makes up for it quite satisfactorally. Steven Moffat keeps up the tension as more and more pieces of the puzzle involving the now officially named Silence are put in place, and an opportunity is grasped for an audacious solution to a menace that has existed since humanity began.

The USA shooting trip is used to its fullest, mainly in the unusually long pre-credits sequence, and addas a sense of grand scale to an already pretty damn momentous story. My only criticisms are that the music can still manage to almost drown out dialogue, and we didn't get the River Song pay-off, but as far as the latter is concerned, that end sequence was about as good as it gets - on a par with the "Bad Wolf" ending for "Turn Left" (Season 4), and the Daleks fronting up at the end of "Army of Ghosts" (Season 2). The strongest opening of a season of "New Who" so far!

The Final Verdict: And to think, we have only just begun this Season! Can we possibly keep up this "pace"? 8.5/10
