epic - n; AVATAR
19 Dec 2009 18:34At The Movies: Avatar. Once again, "The H Word" raises its ugly head as James Cameron's magnum opus hits the screens, and the nay-sayers sharpen their hate-pens. I've resisted the hype, having only seen two trailers, but I have faith in Mr Cameron, assistant director on one of my favourite movies - Battle Beyond The Stars, with Roger Corman - and mastermind behind my Number One All-Time Movie - Aliens - and he has not failed this fan.
Short version - See this movie. See this movie in 3D.
Scenery = beautiful.
Wildlife = incredible.
Story = excellent.
Performances = first rate.
Effects = best to date.
Oscar potential - vast...
The only niggles are that maybe the movie was a little too long - although every minute is packing with incredible stuff - and there was a "punch the air moment" that was a little telegraphed. But it's all small stuff - the whole experience just steamrollers all over that...
The last movie of the year - the best movie of the year. Almost movie of the decade, apart from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Worthy company, I feel.
The Verdict... I'm going to say it again: See this movie. See this movie in 3D. 9.5/10.
