patentdragonWell, maybe not one night only on the double feature, as I could only fit in Tokyo Gore Police last night, and Mega-Shark Versus Giant Octopus tonight.
Tokyo Gore Police. The short version - Robocop meets Kill Bill meets Society in the dreams of David Cronenberg. On acid.
"The winner, and new champion...!" A thoroughly twisted production that takes the "body horror" genre to a whole new level in a tale of justice, revenge and enough stage blood to float Japan right out of the recession. It's not all horror and action, as there is actually a decent story to be told before the privatised Tokyo Police finally go apeshit - and so does the story. That's not a bad thing - it's really the only way things can go...
The conclusiom... well, let's just say this is somewhat open ended - but just how much further can the makers go? And if they do, will the UK censors let it through?
Verdict: 8.5/10
Mega-Shark Versus Giant Octopus. The short version - 50s B-Movie meets 00s Blockbuster, and beat the living budget out of each other.
I don't know how much this was made for, but about 95% of the budget was spent on the FX. That 95%, I have to tell you, wasn't very much. But if you turn a bling eye to the shortcomings (flashes to conceal iffy cuts, numerous repeats of FX sequences), the patchy script, the yawning gaps of common sense (the jumping and swimming capabilities of said Mega-Shark), and the distinct possibility that the title is probably the best thing about the movie, you will enjoy yourself.
Very much recommended for the fan of movies that trip over their own aspirations.
The Verdict: 7.5/10
