On The News Right Now... the Joanna Yeates murder - and I'm starting to smell a fit-up. The landlord has been arrested on suspicion of the murder, but his unwillingness to speak to TV reporters earlier in the investigation is probably going to be used against him - even though he may have been trying to protect the investigation from wild media speculation, which has impeded justice on several occasions in recent years. Of course, he could be guilty as sin, and the police may already have all the forensic evidence they'll need for a "bang to rights" conviction - or maybe they'll just check out his hard drive, find some "suspicious" material, and justify the public thirst for a quick trial on the basis of that...
...and along comes another "Jane Longhurst Law", denying freedom to some minority group who are now Legally "criminals" because their tastes and preferences don't fit the Government- prescribed "norm". Don't say that doesn't happen in this country, it already has, and I'm suspecting Mister Landlord might just turn out to be a cross-dresser. Yeah, that'd be "sick" enough to bang him up, right?
Or just maybe, he's that greatest of all monsters in these "celebrity"-obsessed, superficial times - A "LONER". Yeah, that's all they'll need to bang him up. If you're not one of the mindless throng, getting drunk every night and dreaming of that holy grail of "fame", then "there must be something wrong with you"...
Prosecute on the evidence, not the moral indignation. It doesn't make good law, and it doesn't make for true justice.
I hope they find the murderer(s). I hope he, she or they pay to the fullest extent the law - not the media - will allow. Just make sure they're the right he, she or they.
