At The Movies: Monsters Vs Aliens It's not quite Blockbuster Season yet - more like Blockbuster "Pre-Season" - but the warm-up has already begun, with the release of another CG animation. However, Monsters Vs Aliens breaks out of the increasingly repetitive "ragtag band of mismatched comedy animals with famous voices" rut that's become too popular with unimaginative movie execs - "Madagascar", "Over The Hedge", even Pixar's "Ratatouille" - instead, we have a ragtag band of mismatched monsters, and a supporting cast of *gasp* HUMANS! The result is a thoroughly enjoyable child-oriented yet adult-friendly adventure more in the vein of The Incredibles - there is something of a similarity between the alien probe-robot and the hero-busting robot from that very movie, but the battle scenes are just that bit more impressive that you'll forgive the lack of originality.
The movie doesn't drag on and on, weighing in at 94 minutes, and you don't have to wait long for the action to kick off. The voice-acting is of first-rate quality - even though President Steven Colbert isn't a household name this side of the Atlantic, he makes a good comedic impression throughout - and the character design is quite competent, even if personal favourite Insectasaurus does rather strongly resemble a 350-foot tall Totoro, complete with blank, distant expression, which is my only real niggle with the movie. As Easter holiday fare goes, you will struggle to find anything as satisfying, and if this is what "pre-season" is like, roll on the regular season!
The Verdict An afternoon or evening well-spent. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll cheer - exactly what any good movie should do. Not only Pixar can deliver the computer-generated goods! 8 /10
Meanwhile... FINALLY - MoN-202 "Mane-of-Night And The Watcher From Beyond" is provisionally "in the can". The epilogue needed more work than I anticipated, and may yet require some polish, but the meat is very much on the bones... and I think my bed is calling. My trip to the movies today was meant to be something of a reward for all the hard work, but the end-result is essentially the same, and all without any harm being done. I'm satisfied, and that's what counts, in the end.
Tomorrow... an early-ish start to watch the Malaysian Grand Prix. What'll be the excuse for screwing Lewis Hamilton this time...?
