You Sneaky Bastard...
31 May 2008 20:32Just been watching the latest Doctor Who - "Silence In The Library"; the first in a two-parter by soon-to-be series boss Steven Moffat. It's another great story with fantastic concepts...
...including one of mine.
Yeah, Steven, you nicked my idea. There's a new character in this story who clearly already knows The Doctor - only he hasn't met her yet. That's pretty much what I had in mind for The Traveller - he'd met The Doctor on several occasions, in different regenerations, but the two of them were never in step with each other. When The Doctor first met The Traveller, for example, it was as the William Hartnell (First) Doctor, before he came to Earth, and he stopped The Traveller from being executed for almost starting an interstellar war - I had great visions of an alien courtroom, with the Hartnell Doc standing there as counsel for the defence, clutching his lapels in a scholarly fashion...
I didn't plan to write the stories, but the potential was there for some fun, even a crossover - I actually came up with an idea that could have had the Tenth (current) Doctor and Donna ending up on Yafornis - but I spent quite a bit of the latest episode watching how the two disjointed characters interacted, and imagining David Tennant's Doctor explaining the Time War to a shocked Traveller. The way The Doctor didn't cotton on to the complexities of the relationship with the new character tells me he hadn't been through this sort of thing before, effectively negating the Traveller interaction...
*sighs*
I'm not bitter, or angry. I think Steven Moffat has started off something very interesting, and there's a lot more to tell, which will certainly keep the actress in question in work for quite a while. Just make something great out of this, Steven, and it's all yours.
You can guarantee that The Traveller will hint at past meetings with The Doctor some time soon... or maybe he's met The New Character... :D
