Ten Reasons...
8 Feb 2008 22:30Stay tuned for the Main Event - but first...
In Today's Episode... "Prelude To A Darkening Tide" continues: Mane-of-Night responds to Darkhawk's emergency, and Myr'aa recounts her experiences on Yafornis, including a fascinating discovery concerning Talona's recent activities...
Release notes... There it is - Friday, as promised. Development for TDD-507 "Nightmare" is also progressing well, with the star of this story a half-chapter (maybe) from taking to the stage. Gonna be fun.
...and now back to our scheduled programming:-
Ten Reasons...
...why Cloverfield kicks the ass of Godzilla In Name Only (1998)
1) Cloverfield isn't a pussy - it takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. GINO runs from helicopters.
2) Cloverfield's "young" are way scarier than Babyzillas.
3) A human cast you actually care about (not a geeky scientist in sight)...
4) ...and who aren't hammy "actors", taking a break from "serious" work. Yes, Broderick, I mean you.
5) Off with her head!
6) NO-ONE "Evel Kinevels" a taxi out of Cloverfield's mouth.
7) Hey - when buildings collapse and something huge is stomping around, people DIE. None of that "between the toes" crap.
8) GINO gets trapped by a bridge. Cloverfield OWNS bridges.
9) "Hammer Down" versus four Harpoon ASMs - you do the math(s).
10) Cloverfield - mission accomplished? GINO - six feet under.
11) GINO - double trouble (monster plus young); Cloverfield - triple threat (monster plus "young" with deadly bites!)
...and finally...
12) Which movie gets the nice Ifukube-style end theme...?
Only criticism: The frightfully convenient rescue station. Half-mark off, but not a terminal flaw. I can live with it.
Final assessment: Short, but would any more have been too much? Simply a fantastic giant monster movie, executed with respect to the genre and the audience, taking the former into the 21st Century, and treating the latter like adults. Early front runner for Movie Of The Year. Messers Stark, Wayne and Aslan, the floor is yours. 8.5 out of 10
...and all without a single spoiler, and NO travel complications. And if things couldn't have gone better, there was the BIG-SCREEN DOCTOR WHO SEASON 4 TEASER - whooohooo!
Tonight, I go to bed thoroughly happy. Been a while.
