Transformers Reviewlet
3 Aug 2007 21:37Today's Highlight: Transformers - and look what movie just earned itself this summer's top-slot...
I'm not exactly a Transformers fan - I saw quite a bit of Transformers Beast Wars, which I don't think is exactly "canon" - but hey, giant robots. Giant robots. In first-rate CGI. The transforming thing is pretty cool, too. If you can do all that, and still come up with a winner, why, oh why was Galactus just a big cloud in FF2?
I wish I knew more about the Transform-a-verse, so that I could more accurately judge how far the creators of this movie went to please the fans. From the sources I've been checking out, the fan-reaction has been generally positive, and often quite enthusiastic.
This is how summer blockbusters are meant to be. And no, America doesn't win the day with Jeff Goldblum and an Apple Powerbook. All the humans are just... human, and simply accepting that doesn't hurt the movie at all. The Transformers themselves aren't all-powerful or invulnerable, but there is some nice paranoia generated as the "puny humans" find they have no idea what they're dealing with...
Final Verdict... Exceeded expectations. I expected to be fairly impressed, but I got more than that. Bonus points duely awarded, which means... 9/10
And The Rest Of The Day... No shopping, but that's no big deal. I can just plan a trip elsewhere, and take my own sweet time about it rather than try and pack a 2 1/4 hour movie AND an afternoon appointment into the same day...
