Just in case... it doesn't get posted on the Beeb's site - a comment from Yours Truly about movie memorabilia, quoting an earlier correspondant:-

Bob: "why spend so much on something that's real value is only a few pounds"

Something to do with added, or perceived value, perhaps? A ten pound note is just a piece of paper, and I don't think you can go to the Bank of England and demand your ten pounds of gold, that the note suppsoedly entitles you to.

By a similar standard, you could also say that The Mona Lisa or Guernica are "just pieces of cloth with some paint on it" (not to compare genuine art with movie costumes or props). Also, just who defines what is "actual significance"?

There's more to this, and the value of art in general, than just declaring something to be "sad"...

It really didn't come as any surprise that someone declared the whole business "sad". Happens every time - and the culprits would probably freak out about some football signed by some idiot soccer player.

A Public Service Announcement For the price of a year's subscription to A Particular Non-Terrestrial TV Company, you could easily buy the DVD box sets of the current seasons of 24, Lost and Battlestar Galactica, when they come out. Screw the big TV companies - you know it makes sense...
