In Today's Episode: Spirits are at an all-time high as the Skylance-X mission continues to unfold in The Darkhawk Diaries - but what the people don't know, won't hurt them. Or so Talona hopes...
Yes, this chapter is actually a day late, due to the screwiness of the end of February - BUT I have managed to get the creative flow undammed, so at least I have a semi-valid excuse.
Meanwhile... This month's delivery of comics has arrived, and it's another sizable stack, with quite a bit of catch-up (two issues in one parcel) for a few titles. I have to recommend the following:-
- Astonishing X-Men #13 - Yikes! Joss Whedon keeps it coming... and I have to admit to loving the last page!
- Sentinel Squad O*N*E #2 - Hey, this is fun - the classic mutant-hunting robots get pilots, and fight big stuff, Godzilla-style. Entertaining, yet relevant to recent events.
- X-Men: The 198 #2 - Okay, I am very much a lapsed X-Fan, having been put off by all the convoluted plot-lines of recent years, but "House of M" came up with a genuinely innovative idea - "cull" the ever-increasing mutant population, and leave less than two hundred mutants in the whole world - and then chronicle how the world reacts! I'm getting to know a number of characters who are new to me through this particular title, and so far, I'm impressed!
- Giant Size Ms Marvel #1 - She's back! One of my favourite characters, in one of my all-time favourite costumes. A new ongoing series follows this, and I'm looking forward to it...
- Green Lantern #9 - I was rather sceptical about the return from the dead of classic Lantern Hal Jordan, but hey, it works. The last part of this Batman team-up issue is quite unexpected, and a nice piece of writing (and that's high praise coming from someone who's not really a "Bat-fan"), just like the "WTF?" start. Keep up the good work!
- Birds Of Prey #91 - Do you let a major mob boss die, or allow some kid to be an organ donor, and save the criminal's life? An interesting premise for one of comicdom's more understated success stories!
A lot of my recommended titles spin out of Marvel's last big event "House Of M", but if DC think I'm going to cough up $10 a month for the next however many months as part of their latest marketing ploy... ahem, universe-wide major event tie-in, they must be joking. The two big companies are getting too greedy, and a major motion picture from both DC and Marvel this year aren't going to loosen my purse-strings that much.
"52", eh? "Annihilation"? "Civil War"? With the exceptions of the "core" titles for the Marvel events, I think I'll be seeing you at the end of the year when the trade paperbacks come out...
