Oh No, Not Again...
14 Oct 2007 00:30I get really pissed off when the English keep bleating on about the 1966 soccer world cup, going on as though it's The Only World Championship That's EVER Been Won, and some kind of deep religious miracle event. If England were that good, how come, forty-one years on, they haven't managed to win it, or anything similar, again?
That's "football". Rugby is a different matter.
Right now, England are in the Rugby World Cup final, and will play either South Africa or Argentina (to be decided later today). They win that, and they've managed what their soccer team never has - to defend a championship - and that will earn them proper respect. They win, and no-one will be able to complain when the hype starts to grow again in another four years - they'll be entitled to it.
I know I won't.
Meanwhile... More from "The Helfyre Legacy" tomorrow. Count on it.
