First, yesterday's video offering...

Also, a bit of a quandry - who the hell do I vote for now? One thing is certain - it won't be the Tories, the current bunch, after they put in place MORE rules to stick the knife into the unemployed. Sign on at the Job Centre EVERY DAY? Do they get travel expenses (I suspect not)? Headline-grabbing politicians just LOVE touting tales of big TVs and fancy holidays ALL paid for from taxpayers' money, and £1000 a week "dole cheques" - anything to get voters baying for blood... all while there are STILL individuals in this country who can get their rich accountants to fiddle the figures, and get them off paying ANYTHING.

And if it's true that Scotland's "First Minister" has been speaking in glowing terms about Russia's "dear leader" Putin, then Captain SNP can go screw himself, too...
patentdragon: (Default)
Oh great - here come the "human rights" brigade again. This time, the "rights" being infringed are the "rights" of "travellers" to choose which laws they obey, and which they do not. However, I got really riled by all this "back and forth" in the courts about whether the Dale Farm evictions were legal or not when some arse-particle decided it was all "ethnic cleansing".

You have got to be fucking kidding.

And the police are yet again being accused of being "heavy-handed"- and what about the "protestors", and their heavy-handed techniques, throwing bricks at police officers? The police are using tasers? Good. About bloody time too.

Latest: The Travellers won't accept alternative accommodation because it's not "culturally appropriate". What IS "culturally appropriate" then? A site with a fucking CASINO on it? A five-star hotel???

"Bet you wouldn't talk this way if it was YOUR protests in support of YOUR cause that were being so brutally suppressed", whine the protestors. My response:-

Point One: If any protest I was involved in dissolved into violence against the police as an act of "anarchy", I'd be gone. Outta there. It would cease to be "my cause".

Point Two: Dale Farm isn't "your cause". You're just there to take a shot at the police, and maybe get some hard-working police officer fired or jailed, whilst you rake in the compensation - and the hits on YouTube...

Point Three: Shouldn't you be at college? If you're skiving off, your tutors should have the right to kick you off the course, and allow someone who's willing to do the work to take a shot at getting the qualifications they need - they deserve.

Shouldn't you be out looking for a job? If you're on Jobseekers Allowance, the Jobcentre would be within their rights (there's that word again - not so cool when someone else uses it, right?) to take your beer and fags dole money off you. It's about time The Fucking System made good on their threats.

(Been a long time since I last used that term...)

Here endeth the rant.

P.S. Took the day off. Ongoing work heating malfunctions.
patentdragon: (Default)
Yep, I took the chance... and actually, things weren't so bad. It was cold, that much is entirely not up for debate, but it was an honest cold - next to no wind, no rain or snow, some decent morning sun. All was well with the world...

...and *gasp* remained that way! It could actually *double gasp* get warmer as the week progresses - hopefully Saturday will be comfortable enough for ANOTHER possible cinema double-header. I'm thinking Narnia - ...Dawn Treader and Monsters *checks cinema website*...

...hmph, no Monsters. An afternoon showing of VOTDT certainly sounds like a goer, though.

Development News... Left the netbook at home, and did writing straight to flash-drive - and that means some good progress on Chapter 10 of Flight 102 Is Overdue. I'm happy with that, but I really need to get back into a "writing at home" groove. I miss my "Groove", which had me posting daily back in the day (and I blame The Fucking System and "Fox River" for killing that).
patentdragon: (Default)
The Student Fees "Protest"... "Demo-lition". Speaks volumes, doesn't it? That's the banner a good deal of these "students" were marching under when they stormed into Conservative Party HQ at Millbank yesterday.

Oh, so it was all down to "anarchists", was it? The University Anarchists Society, perhaps? Let's be honest; this was never going to be a peaceful, civilised protest, and the "rent-a-mob" will be happy for the publicity, as the head of the Students' Union condemns them, then goes home, cracks open a bottle of "Bolly", and toasts them for nearly killing a police officer by throwing a fire extinguisher off the roof of the building.

"Why didn't the police do something?" What, and get pillioried AGAIN 'cause some hippy got a bump on the head, and a police officer happened to be within ten feet of them? If I was working in that building, I'd probably sue both the NUS and the police for the respective action/inaction... and don't anyone give me that "heavy-handed policing" bullsh8 - how heavy-handed can fifteen police officers be when they're pinned against a building by twenty thousand baying "students"?

Don't think for one moment that we've seen the last of this kind of action, 'cause I get the feeling the JobCentres will be next (and that's NOT an incitement to criminal action, MI5 - it's an entirely valid observation)...

WARNING - rant bomb, enhanced with 'colourful language', ahead! )

Ah, screw all this - I'm starting to hear the Red Lantern oath inside my head...
With blood and rage of crimson red,
Ripped from a corpse so freshly dead,
Together with our hellish hate,
We'll burn you all--That is your fate!

—Atrocitus, Green Lantern (vol. 4) #32 (June 2008)
And finally, this: Mr Nick Clegg, I voted for the Liberal Democrats in May on the basis of what appeared to be an enlightened and positive policy on the unemployment situation - a policy you have ditched for a sniff at power. I will not vote for your gang of scum again.

Rant channel closed.

Oh Joy, It's More Sh8 About The Election... New Liebour's "punch the unemployed" bombshell has made it crystal clear what the "key issue" in the election has to be (IMHO). The unemployed have very swiftly become the Great Satan in this campaign - it's like that garish embroidered tablecloth your granny gave you, which you only wheel out when you absolutely have to, and which stays hidden at the back of the drawer the rest of the time. The economy is in the shitter, so let's find a scapegoat, shall we...?

Here's the bottom line: sensible policies concerning reducing unemployment are all well and good, but there is a disturbing tendancy in UK politics to "talk tough", and dig up a few juicy threats, like New Liebour's after "two years take this job or lose your money", following fast on the heels of "the unemployed should fear a Labour win at the election". Pardon me, but what the f97k is that supposed to mean?

The politics of fear are the politics of tyranny.

The runners and riders are... )

All very interesting. That rather narrows the field - some clarification would be welcome...

Today (Thursday) was never going to amount to much, as it was kind of a "wind-down" day, but I did manage to make an impact on the whole Mission 101 thing - I have a more organised, more complete list, and I am officially 2 for 101! I'm definitely feeling more "centred" about this particular endeavour, and I may yet come up with enough objectives to complete my list.

Tomorrow is a bit arsed up too, as The System request my presence out of town - and it's probably gonna p!$$ down as well. The weekend takes a bit of a knock, too, 'cause Avatar (3D) only gets evening showings at our cinema on one of the smaller screens this week - oh well, can't win 'em all. More time for writing.

Bah, it's raining outside, and too cold for sitting up any more. Bed calls...
patentdragon: (Default)
To The Fucking System...

If you tell someone they have to be at your offices ten minutes before their appointed time, and they do just that, then you absolutely NO RIGHT to look down your nose at that person FOR BEING EARLY, AND carrying out the exact task they arrived early to do. This particular "customer" is most glad that he doesn't have to put up with your bullsh8 again this year, and not again until near the end of January.

Have a sh8 Christmas, and a worse New Year...

-PD-

Meanwhile... That's it. New computer next year. Maybe plural, to go with a change of address...?

Next: CSI Miami - hankies at the ready...
patentdragon: (Default)
(quote) More news later, perhaps - unless I'm too busy writing, of course :D

...or sleeping at the keyboard.

Right... so Sunday didn't quite work out as expected. Sunday night was a wash-out, I barely saw a third of the football - but the Redskins did beat Oakland 34-13; the second 30-plus point game in a row, for the first time since 2006. Can we possibly have a decent end to the season, or is this just a blip in our headlong rush to the #1 Draft Pick?

What little writing that did get done has been the springboard for this morning, which sees Chapter 5 of TDD-604 "Coming Home" completed at last, and good ground-work pencilled in for the concluding chapter. There are two appointments left to deal with before Crispness, and perhaps for the entire rest of the year - the System, on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, a meeting to finalise Work Slots 1 and 2 in 2010 - but that, and Crispness Eve with the family, are the only creative obstacles until next year. Yay!

Tomorrow: the season finale for CSI Miami... oooh, crickey. Oh, and TDD-604 begins!
patentdragon: (Default)
Well, that's a relief - my appointment was entirely stressless, and the quick turn-around allowed me to do some more Christmas shopping - but I'm still stuck for ideas for anything for myself. It's a major pain in the backside that, all of a sudden, two-disk "Special Edition" DVDs have fallen out of fashion, as the movie industry makes the "big push" on Blu-Ray - sorry, but that's not going to happen! I am NOT buying all my movies and TV shows AGAIN just because "HD" is so bloody fashionable... oh, and you still cannot get Starcrash AT ALL.

Ye gods, how I'm missing Woolworths. There is absolutely nowhere in town to buy mainstream toys and DVDs "off the shelf" any more, and electricals are a lot less readily available than they were a few months ago...

Okay, back to work on TDD-604 "Coming Home". The last couple of days have been fairly quiet on the development front, but I should be able to make good on my completion estimate now that I have clear sailing ahead until next week. Fingers crossed.
patentdragon: (Default)
Type-up from Work Slot 3 is 99% done - a small section needs fine-tuning. I have an out-of-town appointment tomorrow, courtesy of TFS... I may be going on a "shopping" trip this weekend. Haven't had time to properly wind down yet - may still be a while before I manage that...

Must almost be time to pre-book for Avatar 3D at the local cinema, if they have their kit in and working.

Almost time for CSI Miami. Must dash.
patentdragon: (Default)
Tomorrow isn't going to be a whole lot of fun, but if it gets the family medical situation on the path to resolution, I'll bite down, and get on with it.

If The Fucking System know what's best for them, they will NOT screw with me. This matter needs to get settled, and it's pretty much down to me - at least I can ACTUALLY do something to help for once.

At least the comic order is away. It would've been so easy to get that lost in the chaos at present.
patentdragon: (Default)
In Today's Episode... The truth about "The Curse" becomes clearer as Mane-of-Night and Asor seek more expert assistance, and the relationship between the Gara-Morsa and the Gara-Laserma takes an alarming turn for the worse. More than one collision seems imminent...

Development News... I'm moving forward with Part 2 of TDD-603, making a good start on Chapter 2 (5 of 9) - but I'm not going to set any finish dates this time. This ends when it ends, and there'll be plenty of time AND opportunity to push onward with writing projects very soon (see below).

Meanwhile... So far, my craft projects haven't kept up with my literary creativity. Not even close - Craft Project #1 is still just a sketched pattern, some leather, and two packs of padded insoles (you may see where I'm going with this...), with no official measurements on record so far. A previous project, involving the conversion of one garment into another, has caught my attention again, but it looks like that will require more work than originally envisioned. Doesn't mean that that is a non-starter, no sir; this particular piece of work - I'll call it "Craft Project #0" - should be a lot easier to carry out than the "big baby", and both should/could, with some application, be ready for when the "Hallelujah Chorus" arrive... hee hee hee.

Elsewhat... The usual appointments with The F...ing System have been causes for mild weekend anxiety in recent months - not that they've been giving any hassle - but next week is the one and only time I have to face them in May. The next time I'm due, I'll actually be well into Work Slot 2! Yippeee! Add to that the start of Blockbuster Season, and things could only be better if certain financial obligations were met at last (coughs), and we got the "hot, dry summer" we've just been promised...
patentdragon: (Default)
Apparently, KISS are getting US fans to write in and decide the itinery for the upcoming US tour. If I wrote in, and was really nice about it, could they perhaps play in the school playing field at the bottom of my garden, sometime between the 18th and the 24th of July? I would really love that, because that would coincide with the RETURN to my neighbourhood of those Christian BASTARDS, who for the last two or three years had the decency to camp on the very edge of town, and do their happy-clappy crap far enough away from me that I never even realised they were in town.

Christians Loudly Annoying Neighbours are back - coming this Summer. This time, it's personal.

I better be in a position to arrange an out-of-town (or our of country) vacation for that week. Anyone who stands in the way of it may not survive the encounter...

Meanwhile... Guess it's bed-time, before another TFS Tuesday. Once again, hassle avoidance would be preferred.

Oh, and tonight saw me hit Legendary Animal Taming in Ultima Online. Yaaaaaay!

Been meaning to get a photo of this since it closed...

Click for full image...

Here it is (click for the full photo) - the cost of Gordon Brown's "abolition of boom and bust". Yeah Gordon, yeah Alistair

I would also have included a photo of The Fucking System's lair, following the act of vandalism last night that meant they had to phone me this morning to say I was excused having to attend on health and safety grounds, but then I saw that several other windows had been broken as well, including that of the longest-standing toy-shop in town. I admit that I said "Thank you!" when I put the phone down, and went straight back to bed, but let's face it - this wasn't some political statement. It was typical of the criminality that now seems to be fashionable in this country...

Ah crap - trust someone to ruin the day. At least Chapter 3 of MoN-202 "Mane-of-Night And The Watcher From Beyond" is provisionally done, and Chapter 4 has begun.

Thoughts on a project... a fan-film sequel to favourite movie of mine, Starcrash?

And finally... I was going to do one of those "inspirational poster" things, inspired by a particularly vivid and fun dream I had a few nights back, but as I searched for suitable images to use... oh dear, the individual who appeared to be involved went ahead and blew it. Sorry, I'm just very picky about some things.

De-Seethed

Okay, The Fucking System didn't pull my chain at all, making for a pleasant out-of-town morning, and a decent day overall. I even got some of my post-Slot One goodies, and a little bit of story-work done on the bus there and back. Sweet.

And the rest... Looks like I may be dragging myself into the 21st Century in the next week or so...

Now excuse me - an uninterrupted weekend imminently requires my attention. I fully expect to have MoN-201 "Mane-of-Night And The Dark Child's Descent" finished by Monday - unless I find myself needing another chapter, which isn't beyond the realms of possibility, but I hope to avoid that. Depends how the whole thing unfurls...

Oh, and there may just be something new for The Darkhawk Diaries. I might run a new story, or a special "encyclopedia entry" - there's a lot of background material that could do with a proper airing, such as the full story concerning particular worlds, or characters. The latter will require additional work, but let's see how things go between now and then.
patentdragon: (Default)
Development News... C+ "Must Do Better."

I have "broken ground" on the concluding chapter of MoN-201 "Mane-of-Night And The Dark Child's Descent", but I should have managed to do more. Unfortunately, there's a wee problem with the world, post-Work Slot 1, that dented my creativity right at the start of the day...

Here Comes The Fucking System... It's never the frigging same twice. Just when you thinking The Fucking System have got their heads on straight, they "improve" the way they do things "in response to customer feedback", and your local TFS branch suddenly can't handle things on their own any more - AGAIN. Tomorrow, I have an appointment that requires an early-ish start...

...and today, they had the gall to phone me up in the morning to fucking remind me. Thanks a frickin' bunch.

Just don't mess with me tomorrow. I will NOT be in the mood for bullshit.
patentdragon: (Default)
Ah good...

Today, I slipped the clutches of The Fucking System for the rest of the year, and into the latter stages of January. You usually get a "week off" at this time of year, and the next appointment happens to come right in the early stages of my next period of employment, when I will be beyond their reach - Oh. What. A. Shame.

As far as January's employment goes, things have definitely improved - the pay has gone up considerably, the venue this time is easier to get to, even the orientation/training meeting was surprisingly enjoyable.

Gotta love the way the BBC have made the latest Internet Explorer vulnerability a "big story" - what about all the other times? We just got a bunch of updates, and one of the biggest, as usual, is a patch for IE7. And out of the woodwork come all the smug Mac and Linux users, boasting about how none of these threats affect them...

In more tech-news, it transpires that it would cost £15 billion pounds to install a fibre-optic network UK-wide, allowing us a quantum leap in internet speeds. Pity we don't have the money to put that in place before the economy picks up again, putting us in an excellent position to exploit the upturn. Thanks again, Gordistair...

Testify, brothers!

On the development front... MoN-201 "Mane-of-Night And The Dark Child's Descent" continues its passage through the creative processor, and the story keeps on growing - five chapters, and things have still got quite some way to go. Thankfully, the posting date should be about the end of Q1, 2009...

This time next week... My last appointment of the year, and the CSI Miami season finale!

And finally... Screw you, Russia - I'll use ;-) where and whenever I like, and I will not pay your copyright pirates a single penny. You lost the Cold War; LIVE WITH IT.
patentdragon: (Default)
And here we go: the New Labour Government's "compassionate" welfare reforms are revealed (and no, there isn't going to be "anything after the fold" - you get it like it is)...

Testify, brothers!

Sources: "Benefit reforms 'mean fair deal' - "Q&A: Welfare reform white paper"

...and as expected, it's more of the same - not "carrot and stick", but a red-hot poker up the arse, dressed up as "reforms" for the big pro-Labour newspapers, and the Tax-Nazis. Plans for "support for the unemployed" actually mean "£25 on top of your wages when you get a job" - but what about actually getting the damn job in the first place? That's the whole problem, and this all does absolutely zero to address that - my, what a frickin' surprise.

(And I wouldn't be surprised if there were so many conditions imposed that almost no-one would actually get their £25 - "Sorry, your feet are different sizes", "Sorry, you're too white", "Sorry, we just changed the rules to exclude you, ha ha ha...")

Another hilarious notion - your money will be cut if you "refuse a reasonable job offer". Now, Mister Purnell, just what do you mean by that...? To me, a "job offer" comes from a prospective employer, who has

1) received your application,
2) assessed your application,
3) invited you to interview,
4) assessed your performance at the interview,
5) has decided that you are the best person for the job, and finally
6) calls you up and says "When can you start?"

A sheet of paper, handed to you by the JobCentre Plus staff, with the details of a "suitable vacancy", is not a job offer. If you mean "actively pursue a suitable vacancy", Mister Purnell, you need to actually say that, not stick in some "catchphrase", like "prepare for work" - that sounds to me like "wash, shave and put on a clean shirt", and not "get training or other job skills". Did no-one go through this with you before you gave your speech, so that you could iron out the ambiguities? Clearly, the answer is "no".

None of these latest "wizard wheezes" do anything other than keep The Fucking System in business, a system that direly needs a complete overhaul. The worst thing about trying to get a job when you've been "long term unemployed" is that there's a junior secretary with the job of thinning out the applications before the head of Human Resources gets to see any of them, and she's under strict instruction to bin any application that has more than 3-6 months TOTAL unemployment - and every form you fill in now has the dreaded words:

"give details of your work history, ACCOUNTING FOR ANY GAPS"

What's needed is a way past that barrier, an opportunity to talk to a suitable employer and say "Here I am, here are my qualifications, here are my skills - what do you think? Any chance of a job...?" Unfortunately, that doesn't generate the same juicy headlines as "JOBLESS TO WORK FOR BENEFITS"... "BACK TO WORK OR LOSE YOUR DOLE"... and on, and on, and on, and on...

And by "WORK", we mean "charity work" - and I'll tell you now that I WILL NOT "WORK" IN A CHARITY SHOP AGAIN, not after "The Year Of Pain". However - and here's the real joke...

...none of this even comes close to coming into effect until 2010-11, when this New Labour Government will have been booted out. Pity that the Tories, the only likely replacement, openly and actively support these "reforms". Same barrel-organ, different monkey.

*sighs*

And forget trying to get a job at Woolworth's. They're screwed - officially. The closing down sale starts tomorrow.

Guess I'll be going out shopping tomorrow.

End rant transmission.

And finally... "Assisted dying"? Let the patient decide, and the patient ONLY. No pressure from family, or society - and if the God-Squad want to force you to stay alive against your will, the Church should pay for your treatment - ALL your treatment, and NO short-cuts.
patentdragon: (Default)
Isn't this just typical? Ten days to go until I hit my self-imposed deadline for the conclusion of Darkhawk Season 5, and two days this week are due to be chewed up and spat out by appointments. I've already effectively lost Monday to The Fucking System - isn't it amazing what ten minutes of signing on can do? - and I'm still fighting this frickin' cough/cold/whatever. Not having two hassle-free days in a row all this week isn't going to help.

I've finished my Ultima Online architectural business, so the way is now fairly clear for story development...

...argh, missed a story post slot for TDD-511. I blame the house-building, which has to be done before the old place falls down, and I'll make the ncessary catch-up on Tuesday evening.

Monday Night Football approaches - actually managed to tape the last quarter last week. What proportion of "watched" to "slept through" will I manage this week? "Are you ready for some football?" Sure I a... zzzzzzzzzzzz...

Double dose of football next week - Saints - Chargers in London coming up, and that means extra coverage. Wheeee*coughs*!
patentdragon: (Default)
Tomorrow could be a nice day, one of the few we've had this "summer", but I'm not really looking forward to it. It will either work out as a fortunate anti-climax, or marks the end of The Fucking System's hold on me, whether they like it or not...
