...GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is out on home release ON MONDAY????

Looks like I'm making a diversion to the nearest outlet on the way to work, then.

Also: new boots ordered. It's nearly Patent Saturday, so what better way to celebrate (apart from the now almost traditional get-away)...?

"...a brand new gaming PC!" - or at least that's what I'm now researching. Yeah, I got the laptop back yesterday (with a new fan in it), and following some advice from Ultima Online associate Aurelius (thanks, my friend), I searched online for any indication that this laptop's issues might be something others have encountered, and perhaps solved without any additional expense - only to learn that a whole bunch of folks have experienced the same overheating. There is an official "solution", in the form of a fan override program that forces the fan to work at maximum speed on request...

I installed it, and it worked just ONCE (so far). I got good FPS and a fairly cool system for a short stint at Minecraft, and Star Trek Online ran pretty well after that... BUT the heat then was definitely on the increase, to what felt like dangerous levels.

This is getting beyond a freaking limit. There may be other things I can do, but I'm now certain those will only be short-term work-arounds. A new desktop gaming machine is becoming imperative.

Time to climb the Mount Doom of computer specs. unfortunately, I don't seem to have a Samwise to share the journey with me...

I'm still around, but I just went through a month that has eroded some of my enthusiasm. Minecraft troubles (now resolved pretty much), back pain (still an issue)... that kinda thing. So, what can I talk about today?

The big news would have to be that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY has become the most successful film in the US this summer, and perhaps this year. If you include international box office, the latest Transformers comes out on top, but a month on, GUARDIANS is still packing them in - and quite right too!

Talking about the year's blockbusters, you have to mention that the home releases are starting to come out, most notably CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, which still looks awesome on a small, non-3D screen, and I imagine GODZILLA should be out by Christmas.

Last, but by no means least: the return of DOCTOR WHO, and the start of the Capaldi era. He's more Pertwee and Eccleston than Smith and Tennant, but that's no bad thing. Two episodes in, and both highly enjoyable, but we're waiting with bated breath for his defining episode...

Oh, and FOOTBALL SEASON is imminent!!!

So much for me being more regular with blogging.

Anyway, on to something else: new video series...!

Elsewhat... Toilet Bat was safely returned to the roost, I'm told - but not before another two bats had a similar problem, and one did not survive. A shame, but hopefully that issue is now fully dealt with, and the colony is now secure.

Other Elsewhat... All isn't entirely going to plan on the Star Trek Online front, as the special gear I was working towards (see video above) has turned out to be a bunch more expensive than anticipated. Bugger.

And finally, on a brighter note, I have received the main part of my recent "special present" order. I had thought to do an unboxing video, but I don't really have the proper setting for it. I will, instead, take a photo, and share it here...

Hey look, kids...

I'm a bit behind on reporting the video uploads, I know, but there's the latest, and the rest can be found at aceofthorns.co.uk. Last week got only two videos, 'cause my Long Live The Queen series has reached its "Book 1" end, although I will be playing it again sometime.

Elsewhat... Shopping. I just spent a bit of money on myself (not a huge amount), in part to make good on a Move-related promise to myself. Also... I may be heading South later this summer for a bit of a vacation...

Okay, so that's my extended Spiritwalk down-time done, and it's back to whatever counts as "normal" these days. However, I've not been in a Minecraft frame of mind, lately, and I've actually been doing a whole bunch more Star Trek Online (such as all this evening, bar the usual Ultima Online). I'm not sure I'll be going back to the level of activity I was at before I discovered "Minecrack", but it's been fun.

The Big Question... ...what next? I'm not entirely sure, but I feel inclined to spend some money, after two rather disappointing excursions where I came home with not a great deal of stuff. I may not have the room for much, but dammit...
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Exams are all done (for me at least), and I can at least try to relax for a bit. A shopping/cinema trip tomorrow, in celebration of Spiritwalk (1). It may rain tomorrow, and I have a bit of a sore foot :(, but I shall try and make the most of that, and the subsequent extended weekend. Hooray!

Just hope X-Men - Days Of Future Past is worth the early start...
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Crap. The gas-lift on my expensive office chair has given out on me, making doing pretty much anything difficult and/or frustrating... and topping off my messed-up weekend-plus just PERFECTLY.

However, for the price of a few pounds, and some physical exertion, I can rectify the whole matter. Tomorrow. Hooray for the ingenious folks of Deh Interwebz!

Minecraft Crisis report... Situation semi-fixed. I have a work-around in place that takes a bunch of stress off my system, and makes Minecraft fully playable again. Pity no-one could be arsed to respond to my help-request thread(s)...

What else? Oh yeah - this from yesterday...

Now, I really have to get around to laying down some ...Stargazer Season 2 vids. I am at least further along the path to my ideal recording environment, in that I finally got the perfect desktop timer. Yay!
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Hmm. Bit of a gap, there. So, what's new...?

ITEM! I've been busy with (you've guessed already, I imagine) Minecraft, producing more material for Season IV...

ITEM! ...aaaand I have finally got my hands on Saints Row IV, after missing it in several Steam sales over Christmas.

ITEM! I just finished A Game Of Thrones, and my bookmark is now tucked inside the first few pages of A Clash Of Kings... guess I'll have to get the TV series boxed sets now.

ITEM! I did a bit of shopping the other day, and the first of several items arrived yesterday, just when it was needed (unexpectedly)! Not the potentially essential device to aid my video production, but handy for crafting in the near future.

ITEM! Crap. Writing has not fitted into my schedule so far, since that bit of type-up I did in the wake of the exams and Christmas. I still want to have something posted by month's end, but that's approaching pretty quickly - could be that I may yet change my publishing plans.

We shall see...

And finally... Coming soon: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY LEGO. Niiice.
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Comics Day... and that means a larger than normal parcel containing some stuff I had expected before Christmas, such as the Minecraft Redstone Handbook, one regular and one special edition of the Star Trek Starships Collection, featuring the Defiant and Deep Space Nine - wheeeee, it's Christmas all over again!

Meanwhile... I may have gone past my depth in Minecraft - things have started getting rather crazy, with meteors plunging out of the sky and the landscape crawling with all kinds of new nastiness... Ender Knights, Emperor Scorpions, Water Dragons... *ulp* Attack Squid???

Of course, you realise this means four...?

Season Four. (and I haven't even finished posting Season ONE yet!)
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Back to work Monday, but I still want to squeeze every last moment of relaxation - a.k.a Minecraft and excellent space exploration sandbox Starbound - out of my time off. Also, I'm shopping for essential equipment, and maybe setting things up for Blockbuster Season, so that I can make the most of my Christmas cinema gift-card windfall...

Writing? Not just yet, but this weekend, there WILL be progress. I still have some type-up to do from last month (and last year).

Also, Ultima Online - the first hunt of the year!
patentdragon: (unexpected)
A big day for incoming post - that's a big bit of Christmas shopping done... and I am now in possession of a pretty sweeeet new pair of boots, in prefect timing for Patent Saturday. Excellent!

Yeah, it's been another thin week on the blogging front, but The Stargazer Project - Season 2: The Edge Of Chaos has been getting, and holding, the majority of my attention. It doesn't help that the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special is TOMORROW, and that next week - and the week following - will be dominated by "PatSat"...

Excellent viewing last night: An Adventure In Space And Time, dramatising the origins of the phenomenon that has been - and, I am certain, continue to be - Doctor Who.

What's that? A Gravity review? Oh crap, I have rather dropped that ball...

...ok, a quick one: A good reality-based space disaster movie, that makes the silence of space a character in its own right. Somehow, I was expecting MORE, such as 3D that would genuinely dazzle, but that was not to be. Movie Of The Year? Naaah - a solid 8/10, but all-out space opera (Star Trek Into Darkness!) wins out in that respect.

Look for the tie-in short movie that's going around, which provides an insight into the other end of a conversation in the main movie. It's very effective.

There. Not my best, but it's that or nothing!
patentdragon: (unexpected)
ITEM! So, I finally got that Christmas shopping done, a day later than planned - not that much of a hardship, in all honesty.

ITEM! An issue of concern about one of my net domains has cleared itself up - adding still further to my next credit card bill, which was going to be bigger than normal anyway.

ITEM! I had been thinking of going to Wales to visit The Doctor Who Experience on or before the show's 50th anniversary, but like a bunch of other stuff this year, it simply didn't... materialise. Instead, however, I will be going to the cinema showing of the 50th Anniversary TV special!

All in all, not an entirely unproductive day.
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Sunday comes along, and so does the uploading slot for another Minecraft video...

In the meantime, Season 2 is getting pretty wild. All kinds of crazy crap ensues almost every recording session - and without ANY pre-construction. I haven't built any landmarks, or story-related structures - there just aren't any! Aaaah, the delights of free-form chaos...

Okay - now that's done, it's time for some *gulp* Christmas shopping...

...if the damn site will L O A D before the big day.

Update... So much for my good intentions. The website in question flatly refused to respond, and may just have cost themselves a considerable sale.
patentdragon: (unexpected)

Guess I know what I'll be watching after Agents Of SHIELD.

Meanwhile, the build-up for the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who hits fever-pitch with...

Looking VERY promising. Welcome back, Paul - shame it's been so long, and for so short a time.
patentdragon: (unexpected)
The other day, I found the 2013 edition of my annual "new signature" art-piece, which I sign as the bells ring at New Year. "100 chapters of story in the 10th anniversary year for Darkhawk, or die trying", it reads (or words to that effect)... and boy, have I utterly failed at that. I have become somehow disconnected from writing this year, which I can attribute, without fear of contradiction, to discovering Minecraft.

What do I do about it? Stop playing? That won't solve anything in itself, and will starve my latest, and to date most successful project - the Ace Of Thorns channel - of new material. Better time management is called for, and perhaps a more flexible electronic tool for writing than my phone, which has never been up to the challenge, or my netbook, which doesn't get switched on or even taken out of my working rucksack more than maybe twice a month. A dirt-cheap but efficient tablet, with the ability to turn out rich text documents, seems to be the solution, as the transcription from hand-written to electronic is a time-eater I can't afford these days... and I do still have stories I want to tell.

Tomorrow is a "break day", so I may have some time to think about all this. Making a decision on hardware is a loooooong way away, by the look of things, as the tablet market is so damned congested...
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Bloody hell... sh8 just ain't coming together, is it?

I bought a file box for my current documents on my desk... and it was 5mm too tall to fit where I wanted it...

...I bought a new label-printer, to replace the one I had for a couple of years, only for it to vanish just recently - and it needs batteries that we don't have (and the clock is ticking on the 24 hour timer between buying the new one and finding the old one)...

...and finally, Minecraft: I have been having heaps of fun with a mod that allows you to build fully-functioning ships, and flying machines, these last few days, hence the lack of posts. This will definitely make it into Stargazer Season 2, as will another little thing I just added to the mix... which now it seems to be interfering with the ships mod. I should have known I couldn't be so lucky as to have stumbled upon the perfect final piece to the new Season 2 "jigsaw" when it popped up a screwy fake message on my game's start-up screen. Not funny, man.
patentdragon: (unexpected)
So, the embedding for videos (see yesterday) is bugg(er)ed now, just like Star Trek Online and Marvel Heroes, for some screwy reason. I've also spent much of today doing a virus check to see if that's anything to do with the gaming issues (it isn't), and... yeah, I've really had my fill of all this crap.

I should be in a better mood. On Friday, the new desk for "Ace Labs" (aka "The Office") arrived, less than ONE DAY after it was ordered, AND I was told it would be next (very shortly to be THIS) week. Now that is service! Hopefully, our window-fitters will be able to lift the mood as we go into another week of hopefully final upheavals...

Ah screw it. I'll watch some more videos, then maybe head to bed early(er)...
patentdragon: (unexpected)
Hard drive space concerns have been dealt with*, even though that ate a chunk of the last day of my "long weekend" I *gasp* did manage to get some writing done - as in finally typing up a chunk of the latest Mane-of-Night story. I really need to do more writing, but I'm just not in that groove right now. PLEASE can we get these damn windows sorted so I can FINALLY get organised? It's nearly TWO YEARS since we moved!!!

(*I was going to place a reservation on a 3TB desktop HD at Argos, but noooo, it's not in stock, 'cause it's "discontinued". Oh great - too late on the deal that made this item cheaper than two of the 1TB portable models I just got for video management. Typical...)

Elsewhat... Yay - the Budget has something for me! Income tax will only be charged after the first £10,000 sooner than previous planned! Probably means I won't be getting many more refunds, though.

Also... there's a new Doctor Who trailer. A week and a half to go!
